GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition vs original
The Definitive Edition rebuilt GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas in Unreal Engine 4 instead of the original RenderWare engine. It added new lighting, upscaled textures, GTA V style controls, a weapon wheel and mission checkpoints. It kept the shorter radio song lists of earlier re-releases and dropped San Andreas co-op.

Does the Definitive Edition look better?
Moving to Unreal Engine 4 brought better shadows, reflections and draw distance, plus new lighting. The developers said the new engine made the cities look too clean, so they added dirt and wear back in. Critics liked the lighting but disliked the rain effects, and some scenes looked too dark. Upscaled textures also caused visible errors at launch.
Are the controls different?
Yes. All three games now use controls modelled on GTA V, with a weapon wheel, and you can run while shooting in every game, which only San Andreas allowed before. Failed missions restart from checkpoints. Reviewers mostly welcomed these changes, though some found the targeting uneven.
Were songs removed from the radio?
Yes. Rockstar said the soundtracks match the 2014 re-releases, which had already lost songs because of licensing. Wikipedia counts more than 30 songs missing from Vice City and San Andreas together. See GTA radio stations for the stations themselves. Some cheats were also removed.
Can you still buy the original games?
Rockstar pulled the originals from digital stores on 13 October 2021, which drew complaints about game preservation. It later gave the original PC versions to Definitive Edition owners on the Rockstar Store and sold them there until 30 June 2022.
Is the GTA Trilogy on Netflix?
The Definitive Edition came to Android and iOS on 14 December 2023, free for Netflix subscribers. Netflix later removed GTA III and Vice City in December 2024, and San Andreas in December 2025.
How did critics rate it?
Poorly. On Metacritic it scored 56 on Xbox Series X|S, 54 on PS5, 49 on PC and 46 on Switch, far below the originals. See the best GTA games ranked for how it compares.
