Fort Zancudo

Updated · Fan site. Not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.

Fort Zancudo is the only military base in Grand Theft Auto V (2013) and GTA Online. It sits beside the Lago Zancudo swamps on the west coast of Blaine County, guarded by soldiers, tanks and jets that react to anyone who gets too close. GTA Wiki says it closely resembles Vandenberg in California. Since 2017 GTA Online players can buy hangars there.

Where is Fort Zancudo in GTA V?

Fort Zancudo is on the west coast of Blaine County in Grand Theft Auto V. GTA Wiki places it on the edge of the Lago Zancudo swamps at the foot of Mount Josiah, with the Zancudo River to the south. The Great Ocean Highway passes along its western side and runs through a tunnel under the runway, so players heading north to Paleto Bay drive right past it. It is the only military base in the game. GTA V came out on 17 September 2013 and the base has been part of GTA Online from the start.

What is Fort Zancudo based on?

GTA Wiki says the base closely resembles Vandenberg Space Force Base near Lompoc, on the California coast. It sees other influences too: the marshes look like Mugu Lagoon at Naval Base Ventura County, and the large number of Marines suggests Camp Pendleton. The name is Spanish: zancudo is a word for a mosquito, so the wiki translates it as roughly "Fort Mosquito". A police scanner line hints at an earlier working name, Kazansky Air Force Base.

What is inside Fort Zancudo?

The base is run by the Air Force as an airbase and munitions depot, with Army and Marine units also stationed there. GTA Wiki lists a main runway, a shorter jet runway near the ocean, three large hangars and several smaller ones, a control tower, a fire and rescue station, a refinery, a munitions store and training grounds with bleachers. Two guarded checkpoints control the road entrances. Inside, players can find vehicles such as the Rhino tank, the Barracks truck, the Crusader, the Buzzard and Cargobob helicopters, the P-996 LAZER jet and the Titan transport plane.

Some details are there just for atmosphere. Bugle calls play on a schedule, with Taps at 23:00 and Reveille at 05:30, and the pause-menu map leaves the base itself blank.

How do you get into Fort Zancudo without a wanted level?

In story mode you mostly cannot. According to GTA Wiki, guards at the checkpoints warn you twice and then open fire, and being spotted inside the fence brings a four-star wanted level. Flying into its airspace starts a radio warning; leave quickly and you get two stars, stay and you get four, with LAZER jets chasing you. Very high-altitude flights can slip past. In GTA Online, owning a hangar at the base lets you through the gates, although stealing a Cargobob or Titan while inside still earns two stars.

What happens at Fort Zancudo in the story?

The base is a backdrop to several of Trevor Philips's jobs. GTA Wiki says that in one approach to the Merryweather heist he has to break in and steal a Cargobob. In another mission he hijacks a Merryweather cargo plane; two LAZERs from Zancudo order it to land at the base, and when he ignores them they shoot it down into the Alamo Sea. In Minor Turbulence, simply flying over the base sends the jets after his crop duster and fails the mission.

After the bank job in The Paleto Score, the military joins the chase with soldiers, tanks and a Cargobob, and the crew only gets away when Franklin scoops the others up in a bulldozer.

Fort Zancudo in GTA Online

Early GTA Online jobs send players into the base to steal Cargobobs, including Base Invaders for Trevor's company. The bigger change came with Smuggler's Run, which Wikipedia dates to 29 August 2017. It added hangars for players to buy, and GTA Wiki says three of them are at Fort Zancudo, with an air-freight business run with Ron Jakowski. The base has since been used in Flight School, races, survivals, a prep job for The Cayo Perico Heist and others. For Halloween 2024, Wikipedia says, UFOs abducted players and dropped them at Fort Zancudo, and they had to fight their way out; the same event added a limited Business Battle at the base.

Is there a jetpack at Fort Zancudo?

Not in GTA V's story. The rumour came from the Mount Chiliad mural, which shows a jetpack. Higgypop's 2017 article says fans looked at Fort Zancudo because GTA San Andreas hid a jetpack at Area 69, its own secret base. A lift on the base that only goes down fuelled the theory, but players who glitched under it found no shaft. The same article mentions a UFO that floats high above the base and, at 3 am, shines a light on one of the roofs.
