Green Goo

Green Goo is a desert story mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), given by The Truth. CJ flies the jetpack after a guarded freight train, shoots open its crates and brings back a jar of mysterious green liquid. Finishing it pays $20,000, turns the Verdant Meadows airstrip into an asset and leaves the jetpack at the airstrip for good.

What happens in Green Goo?

After the break-in at Area 69 in Black Project, The Truth has a second job for CJ. A train is moving some secret material across the desert, and he wants a sample. CJ takes off from the airstrip on the jetpack and catches up with the train.

Soldiers ride the wagons and shoot back, so the player has to hover, dodge and return fire at the same time. CJ shoots the crates on the train one by one until he finds the jar of green goo, then picks it up and flies it home to The Truth. What the goo actually is never gets explained, which fits The Truth's love of conspiracy.

What are the rewards for Green Goo?

According to the GTA Wiki, CJ earns $20,000. Two lasting changes follow. The jetpack now spawns at Verdant Meadows next to the water tank, so it can be used freely in normal play. The airstrip also becomes an asset that builds up money for CJ to collect, up to $10,000 at a time.

What does Green Goo unlock?

The GTA Wiki says it is one of three missions needed to open Saint Mark's Bistro; the other two are Madd Dogg and High Noon. It is the last job in The Truth's series. For the full order of missions see our San Andreas missions page.

Tips for Green Goo

The GTA Wiki notes a useful quirk: no matter which crate CJ breaks first, the goo always shows up in the third one, so there is no need to search the whole train. It also says the train loops for the first ten minutes without ending the mission, so there is time to clear out the guards. After that, the job fails if CJ falls too far behind. Arriving with full health and armour helps, since the jetpack offers no cover.

How do you fail the mission?

The mission is lost if CJ dies, is arrested, or lets the train escape before the goo has been taken.

Why is Green Goo memorable?

It is the first mission built around flying the jetpack in combat, and finishing it is the usual way players get the jetpack for free roaming in GTA San Andreas. The GTA Wiki also mentions an alternate opening: if CJ is too heavy, The Truth taunts him from inside a barrel and sends him off to lose weight before the job begins.
