Boats have been drivable in Grand Theft Auto since GTA III (2001); in the first game they were only scenery. Classic models include the armed Predator police boat, the Squalo speedboat and the Reefer fishing boat. GTA V added the Seashark jet ski and a submersible, and GTA Online's Kosatka submarine serves as the base for the Cayo Perico Heist.

When were boats added to GTA?

According to the GTA Wiki, boats sail past in the original Grand Theft Auto but cannot be taken without mods. GTA III made them drivable, which suits a series set in coastal cities such as Liberty City, Vice City and Los Santos. The Predator is the police boat of the 3D era, appearing in GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and both Stories games. The GTA Wiki says it loosely follows the Cougar Enforcer patrol boat and carries two built-in heavy machine guns on its hull. A version was planned for GTA Advance but was cut.

How do boats work in GTA?

In most games boats cannot sink unless they are blown up. The GTA Wiki notes that wrecks go under in Vice City and San Andreas, and sometimes in GTA IV, where hulls also crumple in crashes. Bad weather throws up bigger waves that can flip a boat, and in San Andreas capsizing kills CJ on the spot, a hazard that also applies in its Boat School lessons. The HD games changed the controls: boats now lean with the analogue stick, shifting weight much like a motorbike.

What boats are in GTA V and GTA Online?

GTA V brought back the Squalo speedboat, which the GTA Wiki says is based on the Sea Ray 210, and introduced the Seashark, a two-seat jet ski styled on the Sea-Doo RXT. The Seashark features in story missions such as Daddy's Little Girl. The game also added the first drivable submarine, a small submersible, and boat trailers that can be backed into the water.

GTA Online went further with the Kosatka, a full-size submarine added with the Cayo Perico Heist update. It costs from $2,200,000 to more than $9,000,000 depending on options, holds the heist's planning table, and can carry a helicopter and mini-subs. The Seashark sells for $16,899 on the in-game DockTease site.
