Little Havana

Little Havana is a mainland district of Vice City in GTA: Vice City (2002) and Vice City Stories (2006), based on Miami's Cuban neighbourhood of the same name. It is home turf of the Cubans, led by Umberto Robina. In 1984 they push the Cholos out with Victor Vance's help, and in 1986 Tommy Vercetti fights beside them against the Haitians.

Where is Little Havana in Vice City?

Little Havana lies on the mainland of Vice City, the 1980s Miami of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Vice City Stories. GTA Wiki places it next to Little Haiti, Vice Port and Escobar International Airport. A road bridge links it to Starfish Island in the bay.

The real Little Havana in Miami grew up around Cuban exiles who left after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, and the game borrows that identity. An in-game tourist guide quoted by GTA Wiki says Spanish is the main language spoken in the district and recommends a visit to Café Robina.

Who controls Little Havana?

The Cubans, led by Umberto Robina, run the district in both games. GTA Wiki says they dominate the southern part of the mainland. Their signature car is the Cuban Hermes, and they also use boats such as the Cuban Jetmax. In 1986, members wear white vests with red bandanas, or fedoras with yellow shirts. In the 1984 prequel they dress in polo shirts and slacks.

Umberto bases himself at Café Robina, which belongs to his father, Alberto. GTA Wiki notes he is voiced by Danny Trejo. In Vice City Stories, a mural called Libre Havana shows Umberto in a pose that recalls the famous image of Che Guevara.

Little Havana in Vice City Stories (1984)

In 1984 the Cubans are not yet secure. GTA Wiki describes a three-way fight between the Cubans, the Mexican Cholos and the Trailer Park Mafia. Umberto sends Victor Vance to wreck the Cholos' businesses. In Papi Don't Screech, Vic protects Alberto from a Cholo attack, and in Havana Good Time he helps destroy the Cholos' weapons warehouse in Little Haiti. That defeat drives the Cholos out of the city. Four of the prequel's empire-building business sites are in Little Havana.

What is the Cuban-Haitian gang war?

By 1986 the Cubans' main enemy is the Haitian gang across the border in Little Haiti. Tommy Vercetti ends up working for both sides. GTA Wiki lists the missions Umberto gives him: Stunt Boat Challenge as a test, then Cannon Fodder, Naval Engagement and finally Trojan Voodoo, where the Cubans and Tommy destroy the Haitians' drug factory.

1986 (Vice City)CubansHaitians

GTA Wiki is not consistent on who wins in the end. Its gang article says the final result of the war is unknown, while its introduction says the Cubans beat both the Cholos and the Haitians. What the games do show is that Tommy stays on good terms with Umberto after Trojan Voodoo. Wikipedia notes that the Cuban and Haitian gangs drew real-world criticism; see our Little Haiti page for that controversy.

What landmarks are in Little Havana?

Besides Café Robina, GTA Wiki lists the Little Havana Police Station, the West Haven Community Healthcare Center, Sunshine Autos, the Cherry Popper Ice Cream Factory, the Vice City Trailer Park and the Print Works on the border with Little Haiti. GTA Wiki notes that Tommy later buys the Print Works and uses it to counterfeit money. A road from Little Havana to the airport exists only in Vice City Stories.

The district also turns up in side stories. GTA Wiki notes that Café Robina is close to the spot where Tommy brings Vice City's arms dealer Phil Cassidy during the mission Boomshine Saigon. In Vice City Stories, the Stonewall J's store only starts selling weapons after Vic completes O, Brothel, Where Art Thou?, and the area also features in Phil's Shooting Range and Burning Bridges. Shops and pickup spots differ between the two games, so a player who knows one version will still find changes in the other.
