Who is Packie McReary?

Packie McReary is one of the most likeable crooks in Grand Theft Auto IV. He belongs to the McReary family, an Irish-American clan from the Dukes borough of Liberty City. Wikipedia describes him as a gangster whom Niko Bellic befriends and helps with a run of jobs. He is fast-talking, reckless and loyal, and he treats crime as the family trade.

According to the GTA Wiki (gta.wiki), Packie was born around 1979. He started young: as a schoolboy he acted as a lookout for his older brother Gerry's jobs. The same page lists arrests in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2005.

Who are the McReary family?

The McRearys are a troubled family, and much of Packie's story is about them. The GTA Wiki lists them as follows:

What does Packie do in GTA IV?

The GTA Wiki says Packie meets Niko through Elizabeta Torres, one of Niko's early employers. After that the two team up on several raids. They rob the Triads and hit the Ancelotti crime family.

The high point is a robbery of the Bank of Liberty in Algonquin, a mission called "Three Leaf Clover". Packie, Derrick, Michael Keane and Niko carry out the job together. It is one of the best-known missions in the game and a forerunner of the heists in later titles. The GTA Wiki notes that Packie spends his share on a red sports car.

Later, Packie and Niko kidnap Gracie Ancelotti, daughter of the Mafia boss Giovanni Ancelotti, to trade her for a bag of diamonds. Wikipedia explains that the exchange goes wrong when Ray Bulgarin steps in, and the diamonds are lost.

What happens to Packie in the endings?

Packie survives both endings. The difference lies with his sister. In the Revenge ending, Kate is killed by accident during the attack on Roman's wedding, and the GTA Wiki says Packie blames himself and his brothers for dragging the family into violence. The full ending choice is covered on our Niko Bellic and Roman Bellic pages.

What is Packie's friend favour?

Packie is one of the friends Niko can call and spend time with. The GTA Wiki says he is free from 4 pm to 6 am and enjoys bowling, darts, drinking, pool and shows, but he cannot be taken out to eat. Once his like rating passes 75 percent, he will rig a car bomb for Niko. Earning this favour unlocks the "Dial B For Bomb" achievement.

Is Packie McReary in GTA V?

Yes. In Grand Theft Auto V, Packie turns up in Los Santos during a random event. According to the GTA Wiki, he and a partner rob a shop in Strawberry, and if the player drives them away from the police he joins the list of hireable gunmen. He takes a 12 percent cut and has some of the best skills on offer, and he can be picked for The Jewel Store Job, The Paleto Score, The Bureau Raid and The Big Score. During The Paleto Score he talks about his old life. He mentions that Derrick is dead and says he has lost touch with Niko. Our Niko Bellic page notes that he even suggests Niko is probably dead.

Packie in GTA Online

Packie came back in GTA Online with The Diamond Casino Heist, which Wikipedia dates to 12 December 2019. The GTA Wiki says players unlock him through a random event in which he is being driven away in a police prisoner van. Once rescued, he can be hired as a gunman with average skills for an 8 percent cut. The same source says his lines in Online are reused from GTA V.
