Parachute
The parachute lets the player jump from aircraft and high places and land safely. It first appeared in GTA San Andreas (2004), then in The Ballad of Gay Tony, GTA V and GTA Online. In those last three it costs $100. In GTA V it is fitted automatically when the player gets into an aircraft once Minor Turbulence is done.
What is the parachute in GTA?
The parachute is an item rather than a weapon, but it sits in the weapon list in the games that have it. It turns falls from planes, helicopters, rooftops and mountains into controlled descents, and it has made skydiving and base jumping a regular part of the series. How does the parachute work?
In San Andreas the player opens it with the fire button after jumping, then turns to steer and leans forward or back to change speed. It is used once and then gone. The Ballad of Gay Tony made the canopy react to wind and added base jumps onto moving trucks. In GTA V, GTA Wiki notes, the player should pull back for a gentle landing, because pushing forward makes the character land face first. Gunfire can tear the canopy and explosions can set it alight. A held button releases a coloured smoke trail, and a reserve chute was added with an Online update.
Which missions use the parachute?
In San Andreas, CJ learns to skydive in Learning to Fly and later uses the chute in Stowaway and in the casino heist Breaking the Bank at Caligula's (see San Andreas missions). In The Ballad of Gay Tony, High Dive and Dropping In use it. GTA V has Minor Turbulence, a jump from a crane in the construction assassination and a set of parachute jump side activities. In Online it plays a part in the Diamond Casino Heist and the Cayo Perico Heist.
Parachute trivia
GTA Wiki notes that the San Andreas canopy carries a Rockstar North logo, while the one in The Ballad of Gay Tony is made by the in-game brand ProLaps.
