The Lost and Damned is the first of two story expansions for Grand Theft Auto IV, made by Rockstar North. It came out on Xbox 360 on 17 February 2009 and reached PS3 and Windows in April 2010 in Episodes from Liberty City. It follows Johnny Klebitz, vice president of The Lost motorcycle club, in Liberty City and Alderney.

What is The Lost and Damned?

The Lost and Damned is an add-on story for Grand Theft Auto IV. It uses the same map, but swaps Niko Bellic for a new lead and a new crew. The story runs alongside Niko's, so players see some of the same events from another side. It was the first of two episodes, followed by The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Who is the main character in The Lost and Damned?

The protagonist is Johnny Klebitz, voiced by Scott Hill. Johnny is vice president of the Alderney chapter of The Lost MC, a biker gang. He is loyal to the club, but more cautious than the men around him. His story is about what that loyalty costs.

Story

The club's president, Billy Grey (Lou Sumrall), returns after a spell in court-ordered rehab and starts making reckless calls. He breaks the truce Johnny had arranged with the rival Angels of Death, and the two clubs trade attacks across the city.

Billy's plans pull the club into a stolen heroin deal tied to the Triads, and into a diamond theft that links to events in GTA IV. The pressure splits The Lost. Brian Jeremy (Adrian Martinez) turns against Johnny and starts a civil war inside the club. Johnny eventually kills Brian. Billy dies during an assault on a prison. By the end the clubhouse is gone, and Johnny walks away to support the widow and child of his friend Jim Fitzgerald.

What is new in The Lost and Damned gameplay?

The episode is built around motorcycles. Bike handling was improved, and Johnny has his own custom motorcycle. He can call fellow Lost members for backup. Bikers who survive missions gain experience and get better in fights. New weapons include a grenade launcher and pipe bombs. Missions gained mid-mission checkpoints, so a failure no longer sends you back to the start.

New side activities include Gang Wars and Bike Races. Online play gained six new multiplayer modes built around the episode.

When did The Lost and Damned come out on PS3 and PC?

VersionRelease
Xbox 360 (download)17 February 2009
PS3 and Windows, in Episodes from Liberty City13 April 2010 (North America), 16 April 2010 (PAL regions)

The episodes were first announced at Microsoft's press conference at E3 2006. In 2007 Take-Two's chief financial officer said Microsoft was paying US$50 million for the two Xbox 360 exclusive episodes. The first episode was planned for 2008 and slipped to February 2009. Episodes from Liberty City put both expansions on one disc and did not need the base game.

Reception

Reviews were strong. On Metacritic the Xbox 360 release scored 90 out of 100 and the PS3 version 88. Critics praised the bike handling, the story, the voice work and the amount of new content for an add-on. The most common complaints were the auto-aim and the weak AI of Johnny's fellow bikers in fights.

Legacy

The Lost and Damned showed that Rockstar could tell a second full story in an existing city. Its plot runs at the same time as GTA IV and the later episode, and the stories cross at several points. The second episode, The Ballad of Gay Tony, takes the opposite tone, with nightclubs and big action set-pieces.
