Johnny Klebitz
Johnny Klebitz is the vice president of The Lost motorcycle club in Alderney and the protagonist of The Lost and Damned (2009), the first episode for Grand Theft Auto IV. He also appears in GTA IV and The Ballad of Gay Tony, and he is killed by Trevor Philips early in GTA V. Scott Hill voiced him.
Who is Johnny Klebitz?
Johnny Klebitz is a biker in The Lost MC, a motorcycle club based in Alderney, the state across the river from Liberty City. He is the club's vice president and its steady hand. While the president, Billy Grey, is in rehab, Johnny runs the chapter and keeps a fragile peace with the rival Angels of Death.
He leads The Lost and Damned, the first of two story episodes for Grand Theft Auto IV. It runs alongside Niko Bellic's story and shows the same city from a biker's point of view. The GTA Wiki notes that the blue and white paint on his Hexer motorcycle nods to his Jewish heritage.
Story of The Lost and Damned
The episode opens with Billy's release. Billy wants war and quick money, and Johnny wants to keep the club alive. The two clash at once. Their split grows until Billy is arrested during a botched job, which leaves Johnny as president.
That does not end the trouble. Brian Jeremy, one of Billy's loyalists, blames Johnny for the arrest and starts a civil war inside the club. Johnny also struggles for money. He takes work from the drug dealer Elizabeta Torres and even kidnaps Roman Bellic to help his ex-girlfriend Ashley Butler pay her debts. He eventually kills Brian and ends the internal war.
Johnny then gets mixed up in a diamond deal with the mobster Ray Boccino, the same diamonds that drive much of the GTA IV episodes. After it goes wrong, his close friend Jim Fitzgerald is murdered. Johnny learns that Billy plans to testify against the club, so he leads an assault on the prison where Billy is held and kills him.
In the epilogue, Johnny cuts ties with the politician Thomas Stubbs and with Ashley. He steps away from the gang for a time to look after Jim's widow and child.
Johnny in GTA IV and The Ballad of Gay Tony
Johnny appears as a supporting character in the main game and in the second episode, The Ballad of Gay Tony. In both, his path crosses those of Niko Bellic and Luis Lopez around the diamond storyline.
What happens to Johnny in GTA V?
Johnny's return is brief and brutal. Early in Grand Theft Auto V, set in 2013, Johnny is in Blaine County, where a chapter of The Lost is based. Trevor Philips has been sleeping with Ashley, and Johnny confronts him about it. According to the GTA Wiki, Trevor has just learned that his old partner Michael is alive, and he loses control and kills Johnny in front of witnesses.
Ron, Wade and Ashley watch it happen. In 2023, a Halloween event in GTA Online added Johnny as one of several ghosts that players could photograph, near the spot where he died.
Release and reception
The Lost and Damned came out on Xbox 360 on 17 February 2009. PlayStation 3 and Windows versions followed in April 2010 as part of Episodes from Liberty City. Wikipedia reports that critics praised its motorcycle handling and its more personal, dramatic story.
