Bohan
Bohan is the smallest of Liberty City's four boroughs in Grand Theft Auto IV (2008) and is based on the Bronx. It is the poorest part of the city, with gang turf in South Bohan and Fortside. Niko and Roman Bellic hide out there after Dimitri Rascalov's men burn down Roman's apartment and taxi depot.
What is Bohan based on?
Wikipedia names Bohan as GTA IV's stand-in for the Bronx. The game leans on the comparison: GTA Wiki notes that South Bohan is billed as the birthplace of hip-hop, and that the borough's zoo nods to the Bronx Zoo. Many avenues are named after real prisons, such as Alcatraz, Sing Sing and San Quentin, while others take their names from breakdance moves.
The name has a story of its own. An in-game documentary, A History of Liberty City, jokes that it is a Dutch word. GTA Wiki says that is not true and that Bohan is really an Irish surname.
Where is Bohan in Liberty City?
Bohan lies in the north-east of Liberty City, across the water from Dukes and Algonquin. It is the smallest borough, with seven neighbourhoods. GTA Wiki calls it the most economically deprived part of the city and says its crime rate is high for its size. Most residents are Latin American, with Puerto Rican and Dominican communities in the south and west, an African-American majority in Northern Gardens and an Albanian presence in Little Bay. In-game lore dates the borough to about 1664, like the rest of the city.
What are the districts of Bohan?
South Bohan is a large residential area with one of the city's biggest housing projects and is the main turf of the Spanish Lords. Fortside, home to a large Dominican community, is poor, rough and also Spanish Lords ground. Northern Gardens is a working-class, mainly African-American district built around the Northern Gardens Projects, with a police station reached from the projects by a short flight of steps.
Little Bay in the far east is the smallest district, a run-down low-rise area where the Albanian mob operates. Industrial and Chase Point are zones of empty warehouses and old docks. Boulevard is the biggest and busiest by traffic, mostly parkland and businesses with a beach to the north, and according to GTA Wiki it has the lowest crime rate in the borough.
| District | Character (per GTA Wiki) |
|---|---|
| South Bohan | Large projects, Puerto Rican community, Spanish Lords turf |
| Fortside | Poor residential area, Dominican community, Spanish Lords turf |
| Northern Gardens | Working-class, large housing project |
| Little Bay | Small, run-down, Albanian mob activity |
| Industrial / Chase Point | Abandoned warehouses and docks |
| Boulevard | Parks, businesses, beach, least crime |
Who controls Bohan?
Street crime is split between the Spanish Lords, a Latino gang rooted in South Bohan and Fortside, and the Albanian mob in Little Bay. GTA Wiki also connects the Lupisella family, one of the five Mafia families on the city's Commission, to Bohan, though its members are not seen on the streets there.
What happens in Bohan in GTA IV?
Bohan is one of the three areas open to Niko Bellic from the start, with Broker and Dukes, according to Wikipedia. GTA Wiki adds that although Roman warns that the bridges are shut, Niko can in fact drive across the Dukes Bay and East Borough bridges early. According to the wiki, the story first features the borough in either Shadow or Final Destination.
The borough becomes central once the cousins' life in Broker collapses. Wikipedia's plot summary says Dimitri Rascalov's men burn down Roman's apartment and taxi business, and the pair flee to Bohan. GTA Wiki says the South Bohan safehouse opens after the mission Roman's Sorrow. GTA Wiki lists Elizabeta Torres and Manny Escuela among the borough's former residents. In Manny's mission Escuela of the Streets, Niko wipes out a drug gang in a Bohan warehouse.
The borough also features in the episodes The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, where GTA Wiki says it opens with the missions Clean and Serene and I Luv LC. Chinatown Wars keeps it in its smaller map, where it opens after the mission Yu Jian.
How do you get to Bohan?
Three bridges serve the borough, according to GTA Wiki: the East Borough Bridge and the Dukes Bay Bridge from Dukes, and the Northwood Heights Bridge. The Northern Expressway runs through it, and the Bohan subway line stops at San Quentin Avenue and Windmill Street. For services, the wiki lists police stations in Northern Gardens and Fortside, the Bohan Medical and Dental Center, and a fire station that houses Ladder 69. Despite its size, Bohan has two Burger Shot restaurants, one more than the much larger Broker, Dukes or Alderney. It has no gun shop and no internet café.
Bohan before GTA IV and after it
Each era of the series has its own Bronx. GTA Wiki treats The Brix in the 1997 Grand Theft Auto and Wichita Gardens in Shoreside Vale in GTA III as Bohan's counterparts. Bohan itself is not visitable in GTA V, but the wiki says it still gets a mention there.
