Broker

Broker is the borough of Liberty City based on Brooklyn in GTA IV (2008), its episodes and Chinatown Wars (2009). GTA IV opens here: Niko Bellic arrives by cargo ship and moves into his cousin Roman's flat in Hove Beach, a neighbourhood modelled on Brighton Beach. Broker shares an island with Dukes and has 12 neighbourhoods.

What is Broker based on?

Broker is the Brooklyn of Grand Theft Auto IV, as Wikipedia confirms. It fills the southern end of the island it shares with Dukes; GTA Wiki notes that these are the only two boroughs on one landmass. The wiki counts 12 of the city's 65 neighbourhoods here, which makes Broker the third-largest borough after Dukes and Algonquin. Many of its streets are named after cowboys and Wild West terms, while most avenues carry the names of Native American peoples.

Almost every neighbourhood has a clear real-life model. GTA Wiki pairs them as follows:

Where does GTA IV start?

In Broker. Wikipedia says Niko Bellic reaches Liberty City on the cargo ship Platypus, and GTA Wiki notes that the game begins in this borough, where Niko meets his cousin Roman Bellic. After the first mission, The Cousins Bellic, Roman's small Hove Beach apartment becomes Niko's first safehouse. GTA Wiki adds that it can no longer be used after the mission Roman's Sorrow, when the cousins move to an apartment in South Bohan. Roman's own story, from his debts to his taxi depot, is on his page. For the first part of the game Broker is home turf, together with Dukes and Bohan. Wikipedia explains that the bridges to Algonquin are closed because of a terror threat, so early missions stay on this side of the river.

What is Hove Beach like in GTA IV?

Hove Beach is the heart of Broker's story. Wikipedia says it is based on Brighton Beach, and that its name plays on the English city of Brighton and Hove. GTA Wiki adds influences from Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. The area is largely Eastern European, with a big Russian community and many shop signs in Cyrillic. Its main road, Mohawk Avenue, runs beneath the Broker subway line, and Roman sums the place up as a small piece of Eastern Europe in America.

GTA Wiki lists Roman's cab firm, Express Car Service, along with the Perestroika club and Comrades Bar among its places of interest. The wiki also calls Hove Beach one of the roughest parts of Broker, with Russian crews tied to the Faustin and Rascalov mob (see Dimitri Rascalov) and to the Petrovic family. They protect Niko for a while, then turn hostile after the mission Russian Revolution. GTA Wiki counts 17 GTA IV story missions set in the neighbourhood.

What are the other parts of Broker?

Firefly Island is the seaside fun zone, with a funfair, a roller coaster called the Screamer and a bowling alley. Downtown Broker is the business centre, and Beachgate is a gated area for wealthier residents. GTA Wiki describes BOABO and East Hook in the west as gritty and industrial, with the Broker Navy Yard in East Hook. To the east, Schottler and Beechwood City are home to a Jamaican community, which ties them to Little Jacob. Outlook Park gives the borough a large green space.

Which gangs are in Broker?

GTA Wiki maps the borough's gangs by area. Russian mobsters hold Hove Beach, Firefly Island and Beachgate. A street gang called the Hustlers runs the Firefly Projects, Jamaican crews known as the Yardies work in Schottler and Beechwood City, and the Angels of Death biker gang is based in BOABO. The wiki also mentions a chapter of The Lost MC, the club at the centre of The Lost and Damned.

One leftover from development is still visible. GTA Wiki notes that signs on the Broker-Dukes Expressway point to two places that do not exist in the final game, Hedgebury and Goatherd, which may be early names for Outlook and South Slopes.

How do you get from Broker to Algonquin?

GTA Wiki lists two bridges. The Broker Bridge runs from Hove Beach to Fishmarket South in Algonquin, and the Algonquin Bridge links northwest Broker with the east side of Algonquin. The Broker-Dukes Expressway is the main road north into Dukes, and the subway serves the borough with stations including Hove Beach and Schottler.

Broker in the episodes and Chinatown Wars

Both episodes use the same borough. In The Ballad of Gay Tony, GTA Wiki lists the mission Departure Time in Hove Beach. Broker opens after Clean and Serene in The Lost and Damned and after I Luv LC in the second episode. Chinatown Wars (17 March 2009) starts badly for Huang Lee. Wikipedia says his escort is killed on arrival and he is left for dead. GTA Wiki adds that he escapes from a car sunk in the water at BOABO. The wiki also notes that by 2009 the Petrovic gang is the only Russian outfit left in Hove Beach.

Is Broker in GTA V?

Not as a place you can visit in GTA V. GTA Wiki notes that Trevor Philips mentions Hove Beach during the mission Minor Turbulence, so the neighbourhood is at least remembered in the newer game.
