K-DST

Updated · Fan site. Not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.

K-DST, nicknamed "The Dust", plays classic rock to players of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004). Its host is Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith, a burnt-out former 1970s prog rocker voiced, according to the GTA Wiki, by Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose. The playlist runs through 1970s and 1980s rock from Foghat, Heart, Toto, Rod Stewart and others.

What is K-DST?

K-DST is one of the music stations in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Rockstar's 1992-set game across the state of San Andreas. It plays rock from the late 1960s to the end of the 1980s: driving guitar songs, arena rock and a few ballads. One station jingle, as the GTA Wiki points out, boasts of 22 years on air, which would put its launch around 1970. For the other stations in the game, see the GTA radio stations hub.

Who is the DJ on K-DST?

The host is Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith, a fictional washed-up musician who once played in a 1970s progressive rock band called Crystal Ship. He is vain, cranky and easily lost in his own rambling stories, and he takes a few calls from listeners. According to Wikipedia, the game's radio voice cast includes Axl Rose, and the GTA Wiki confirms he voices Smith. Wikipedia counts eleven stations and twenty DJs in the game, including Chuck D and George Clinton.

This is a selection; the full list is on the GTA Wiki. The GTA Wiki also notes that The Who's "Eminence Front" was used in the game's Xbox trailer, and that Humble Pie's "Get Down to It" plays during stadium events.

Which K-DST songs were removed?

When licences expired, later releases of San Andreas lost some tracks. The GTA Wiki lists Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down a Dream" and Joe Cocker's "Woman to Woman" as missing from the mobile, PlayStation 2 Classics, Rockstar Games Launcher and Xbox One versions and from The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition. Original disc copies still have them.

Where does K-DST play in the game?

Beyond car radios, the GTA Wiki says the station plays inside Binco and ZIP clothes shops and is the default station in most aircraft. It is a favourite of the state's bikers and of the smuggler Mike Toreno among others. Its humour is close to that of the country station K-Rose, and one joke shared by the two hosts hints that Smith was once married to K-Rose's Mary-Beth Maybell.

How was the San Andreas radio received?

Wikipedia notes that San Andreas has more than three times as many licensed songs as GTA III. The rock format lived on in GTA V with Los Santos Rock Radio, and a K-DST T-shirt was later added to GTA Online as a crate-drop reward, according to the GTA Wiki.
