Minigun
The minigun is the heaviest hand-held machine gun in Grand Theft Auto. It first turned up in Vice City (2002) and has returned in San Andreas, the Stories games, Chinatown Wars, GTA V and GTA Online. It usually costs $10,000 to $15,000 in story mode, unlocks late, and tears through vehicles and aircraft in seconds.
What is the minigun in GTA?
The minigun is a rotary machine gun carried by the player, and in most games it is the strongest gun you can hold. It sits in the heavy weapons class, next to the rocket launcher. Its main strength is volume of fire rather than precision, so it shines against cars and helicopters. See the weapons hub for how weapon slots and the wheel work.

Which GTA games have the minigun?
According to GTA Wiki, it appears in Vice City, Advance, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, Chinatown Wars, GTA V and GTA Online. In GTA IV the player cannot carry one; it exists only as the gun mounted on the Annihilator helicopter.
| Game | Price (per GTA Wiki) | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | $10,000 | Phil's Place, after Boomshine Saigon |
| Liberty City Stories | $10,000 | Phil Cassidy's shop, after More Deadly Than the Male |
| Vice City Stories | $15,000 | Vice Point Mall Ammu-Nation, after Farewell To Arms |
| Chinatown Wars | $10,000 | Ammu-Nation online shop, with the top licence |
| GTA V | $15,000 | Ammu-Nation, after The Paleto Score |
| GTA Online | $50,000 | Ammu-Nation, Rank 120 |
Where do you find the minigun in Vice City and San Andreas?
In Vice City, Phil Cassidy's place in Little Haiti stocks it once Boomshine Saigon is done, and copies appear at the safehouses after 60 hidden packages. GTA Wiki also lists a free one on a rooftop reached after the mission Trojan Voodoo.
San Andreas has no shop price for it, so it is a pickup only. GTA Wiki places copies on the Kincaid Bridge, at Mike Toreno's ranch, inside a control room at Area 69 and at two spots in Las Venturas. Several missions give the player a mounted version instead, including Air Raid, The Da Nang Thang and Up, Up and Away!
How do you get the minigun in GTA V?
Trevor Philips is handed one during The Paleto Score, where it is the signature gun of the bank job's shoot-out. After that it goes on sale at Ammu-Nation for $15,000, and GTA Wiki notes shooting range medals cut the price to as little as $11,250. A free one lies in the control tower at Fort Zancudo, and GTA Wiki says it comes back about 30 seconds after you take it.
In GTA Online the gun is locked until Rank 120, then costs $50,000. It can also turn up in crate drops, later Survival waves and some business missions, according to GTA Wiki.
Is the minigun good?
It depends on the target. In the 3D games GTA Wiki says it can wreck most vehicles in about a second, and the San Andreas version has no recoil and a 500-round belt. In GTA V it never needs reloading and fires about 3,000 rounds a minute, but each bullet does less damage than before. That makes it weaker against people without lock-on, while long bursts still set engines alight. Many players keep it for helicopters and armoured convoys.
The trade-off is weight. You move slowly while firing, and ammunition is costly, so the minigun is best saved for moments when a wanted level brings in police helicopters or a heist goes loud.
