Safehouses in GTA

Updated · Fan site. Not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.

A safehouse is a home base where a GTA protagonist saves the game, stores cars and often changes clothes. The idea began with GTA 2's Jesus Saves churches in 1999, and GTA III (2001) brought the first true safehouses with garages. Later games let players buy extra homes and businesses, and GTA Online sells everything from flats to mansions.

What is a safehouse in GTA?

GTA Wiki defines a safehouse as a building with a save point that the player has to walk into to save. Most also have a garage, and many have a wardrobe. GTA III and GTA Advance call them hideouts.

How did saving work before GTA III?

The earliest save point in the series, according to GTA Wiki, is Jesus Saves in GTA 2 (1999). It is a church that the player enters through a doorway to save, and each save costs $50,000. If the player cannot pay, the preacher turns them away. GTA Wiki says GTA 2 is the only game known to charge for every save, and that the fee was dropped from GTA III on. There is one church in each of the game's three districts.

Where are the safehouses in GTA III?

GTA III (2001) gives Claude three hideouts, one per island of Liberty City, unlocked as the story goes on. GTA Wiki says walking through the door saves the game, and that storing cars in garages was new to the series. Rewards for side missions and collectibles such as the hidden packages turn up at the hideouts as weapons and power-ups. GTA Wiki notes two quirks. The Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale hideouts already work at the start of the game, though their islands cannot be reached without cheats or glitches until the story opens them. The garages also stop accepting cars after a set number, even when there seems to be room.

Can you buy property in Vice City?

Yes. Vice City (2002) lets the player buy homes. GTA Wiki lists seven safehouses: the Ocean View Hotel suite that Tommy Vercetti starts in, the Vercetti Estate he takes over in the story, and five others for sale. Prices run from $1,000 for the Skumole Shack to $14,000 for the Hyman Condo, which has three garages. Buying them all is needed for 100% completion.

Vice City also has assets, businesses such as the Malibu Club, Kaufman Cabs and the Print Works. GTA Wiki says each one starts paying a profit once its missions are done, and that assets double as save points. Vice City's property system set the pattern later games followed.

How many safehouses are in San Andreas?

GTA Wiki counts 37 save points in San Andreas (2004). Eight are free, including the Johnson House, CJ's family home in Ganton, the Grove Street neighbourhood, and 29 can be bought, from hotel suites at $6,000 to the Mulholland safehouse at $120,000. Saving means collecting a floppy disk pickup, which restores health and moves the clock on six in-game hours. Garages hold up to four vehicles, and clothes bought in shops can be changed at many safehouses.

How do you save in GTA IV and GTA V?

In the HD games, the hero saves by sleeping in a bed. GTA IV gives Niko Bellic five safehouses, from a flat in Broker to an apartment in Alderney, and GTA Wiki notes that cars are parked in marked residents' spaces outside instead of garages. Each has a TV and a wardrobe.

The story shapes which homes Niko can use. GTA Wiki says he loses the Broker flat after the mission Roman's Sorrow and moves to South Bohan, and that the Middle Park East safehouse is the only one with internet access. A penthouse in North Holland is optional: Dwayne Forge gives it to Niko only if Niko kills Playboy X and spares Dwayne in The Holland Play.

In GTA V (2013) each of the three leads has his own homes. GTA Wiki lists Michael's house in Rockford Hills, Franklin's houses in Strawberry and then the Vinewood Hills, and Trevor's trailer in Sandy Shores, plus Floyd's apartment and the Vanilla Unicorn strip club later on. How long they sleep differs: six hours for Michael, eight for Franklin and twelve for Trevor.

Homes are not for sale in GTA V's story, but businesses are. GTA Wiki says they unlock after the mission Nervous Ron and pay a weekly profit, sometimes with small management jobs attached. They range from Los Santos Customs and Downtown Cab Co. to cinemas and the Los Santos Golf Club, the most expensive at $150,000,000.

What properties can you buy in GTA Online?

GTA Online turned property into a major feature. GTA Wiki describes low, medium and high-end apartments with garages of two, six and ten cars, and says high-end homes gained a heist planning room with the Heists update. It also says Executives and Other Criminals (15 December 2015) added stilt houses and custom penthouses. Wikipedia's update list shows players being allowed to own more homes over time, and luxury mansions arriving with A Safehouse in the Hills (10 December 2025). Many Online businesses, such as the nightclub, also act as places to live.
