Grove Street is a cul-de-sac in Ganton, Los Santos, and the home base of the Grove Street Families in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004). Carl Johnson's family house stands there, along with the homes of Sweet, Ryder and OG Loc. A new Grove Street appears in Davis in GTA V and GTA Online, now held by the Ballas.

Where is Grove Street in GTA San Andreas?

Grove Street is a short dead-end street in the middle of Ganton, a neighbourhood in the east of Los Santos. It gives its name to the Grove Street Families, the gang at the heart of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which came out on the PlayStation 2 in North America on 26 October 2004 and is set in 1992. GTA Wiki notes that both the 1992 and 2013 versions of the street sit near a stadium modelled on The Forum in Inglewood, close to the city's storm drain and a railway line.

The street is small, with a basketball court and a ring of houses. GTA Wiki points out that few cars drive into it and that police sometimes patrol on foot. It is the first place the player gets to know in the game, and Wikipedia's plot summary starts with CJ returning to Grove Street to rejoin his brother and sister.

Most of the game's Ganton cast live within a few metres of each other. According to GTA Wiki:

What is the Johnson house?

The Johnson house is the two-storey family home of the Johnsons, with a garage beside it. GTA Wiki says it becomes CJ's safehouse after the mission Sweet & Kendl. Inside are a kitchen, a games console with a TV, a bedroom upstairs and CJ's wardrobe. The garage can hold up to four vehicles, though large ones may not fit.

The house is also where the story begins and ends. Early in 1992, a Ballas drive-by aimed at Sweet killed their mother, Beverly, at the house, and that is why CJ flies home. Wikipedia says the game's ending also takes place at the Johnson house, where the family gathers to celebrate.

Once gang wars are open, GTA Wiki says the house turns into an income asset. It pays up to $10,000 a day, depending on how much territory the Families hold, with the top rate when all 53 territories are taken. Collecting all 100 tags also leaves a set of weapons at the house.

What happens to Grove Street in the story?

Grove Street is a target from the start. During OG Loc's house party, GTA Wiki says the Ballas send three waves of attackers down the street, and all of them are beaten off. The real blow comes after the betrayal by Big Smoke and Ryder. Sweet is arrested, CJ is forced out of town, and the Ballas take the street.

Even then the house is not lost. GTA Wiki says CJ can still use it, its garage and its weapons while the Ballas hold the area, though rival gang members may attack him there. After Mike Toreno gets Sweet released, the brothers retake Grove Street and Ganton. During the riots near the end of the game, they hold the street, and Frank Tenpenny's story ends there too: the fire truck he is driving falls off a bridge and lands in the middle of the cul-de-sac.

Is Grove Street in GTA V?

Yes, in a new form. Grand Theft Auto V (17 September 2013) has its own Grove Street in Davis, south Los Santos. GTA Wiki says it is about 274 metres long, runs from Davis Avenue to a cul-de-sac and lies next to the storm drain and close to the Maze Bank Arena. It names Palmwood Drive in Crenshaw as the main real-world model.

The street now belongs to the Original Covenant Ballas, and GTA Wiki describes the Grove Street Families of this era as a former set of The Families. The Johnson house itself does not return: the wiki notes that a house in a similar spot is single-storey. Franklin can buy a garage at the street, and the LTD petrol station on the corner can be entered.

The street's biggest moment comes in Hood Safari, where a drugs deal with the Ballas on Grove Street goes bad and Trevor, Franklin and Lamar escape by water on jet skis taken from the rapper MC Clip. GTA Wiki spots a nod to San Andreas in the same mission: three men ride off on bicycles, and the one in front is dressed like CJ in his default outfit.

In GTA Online the street hosts the Grove Street Survival mode and appears in jobs from the Lowriders, After Hours, Los Santos Tuners and The Contract updates.
