Sean "Sweet" Johnson is the older brother of Carl "CJ" Johnson and the leader of the Grove Street Families in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004). He is wounded and jailed after a clash with the Ballas, is freed later through Mike Toreno and rebuilds the gang with CJ. Faizon Love voices him.

Who is Sweet in GTA San Andreas?

Sweet is the eldest of the Johnson children and the man in charge of the Grove Street Families in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The GTA Wiki notes that his first name, Sean, comes from the game's credits, manual and promotional material. The wiki treats him as the deuteragonist of the story, second only to his brother Carl "CJ" Johnson.

His family is small and has been hit hard. His mother, Beverly, is killed in a drive-by at the start of the game. His younger brother Brian died years earlier in an accident that Sweet blamed on CJ, and that grudge is still alive when CJ comes home. He also has a sister, Kendl, whose relationship with Cesar Vialpando he dislikes.

What is Sweet like?

Sweet is defined by his loyalty to his block. He distrusts anyone who leaves the neighbourhood, and he is quick to judge. The GTA Wiki quotes a police file in the game that calls him naive but powerful. His car is a blue Greenwood with the plate GROVE4L, and the wiki notes that after the first one is destroyed he buys an identical replacement.

What happens to Sweet in the story?

In 1992 Sweet is the one who phones CJ in Liberty City with the news of their mother's death. Once CJ is back, the two brothers start winning ground back from the Ballas, reuniting the scattered sets of the gang and pushing into rival streets. Sweet hands CJ many of the early missions; the GTA Wiki counts 15 missions given by him.

The plan collapses in "The Green Sabre". CJ learns that Big Smoke and Ryder have been working with the Ballas and with corrupt officer Frank Tenpenny. He rushes to help Sweet in a fight with the Ballas, and Wikipedia records that Sweet is wounded and locked up. Tenpenny then uses Sweet's safety as leverage over CJ.

While CJ is away in the countryside, San Fierro and Las Venturas, Sweet stays in a prison hospital. According to Wikipedia, CJ takes on a series of jobs for the government agent Mike Toreno in return for his brother's release. Sweet walks free in the mission "Home Coming".

Is Sweet angry at CJ when he gets out of prison?

Yes. The GTA Wiki notes that Sweet insists on going straight back to Ganton and is annoyed that CJ left the hood behind while building businesses elsewhere. The brothers patch things up by fighting together again, and Wikipedia sums up that the pair revive the Grove Street Families before the final push against Big Smoke.

What happens to Sweet at the end of San Andreas?

Sweet survives the game. In the last mission, "End of the Line", he is caught up in the fire-truck chase that ends with Tenpenny's death near Grove Street. The GTA Wiki says Sweet stops CJ from shooting the dying officer and points out that leaving the death to look like a crash keeps the gang out of trouble. The family then gathers at the Johnson house.

Key missionWhat happens
"Sweet's Girl"CJ saves Sweet and his girlfriend from a rival Families set in Playa del Seville
"The Green Sabre"Sweet is wounded and arrested after the Ballas fight
"Home Coming"Sweet is released and returns to Grove Street
"Reuniting the Families"The gang's sets are brought together, and Sweet's first Greenwood is destroyed
"End of the Line"Sweet survives the final chase and Tenpenny dies

Who voices Sweet?

Sweet is voiced by Faizon Love. Wikipedia lists him in the main cast of San Andreas, and the GTA Wiki gives the same name. The game's star names were mostly placed in supporting parts, as our Carl Johnson page explains.

Does Sweet appear in other GTA games?

The GTA Wiki lists no other game in which he appears in person. He returns in the remastered version of San Andreas in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. GTA V takes place in a separate continuity, and its Los Santos has no place for the Johnson family's story.
