The Strip (Las Venturas)
The Strip is the main casino boulevard of Las Venturas in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), modelled on the Las Vegas Strip. GTA Wiki lists twelve casinos along it, including The Four Dragons, where Carl Johnson becomes a part-owner, and Caligula's Palace, the Mafia casino he robs. Only a few of the buildings can be entered.
What is The Strip in GTA San Andreas?
The Strip is the central boulevard of Las Venturas, the gambling city in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. That game came out on 26 October 2004 in North America and is set in 1992, according to Wikipedia. GTA Wiki describes the street as a four-lane road lined with palm trees that serves as the main way into the city's casinos. As a district, it reaches back to the rear of the casino buildings on both sides. The older casino quarter, the Old Venturas Strip, lies near its northern end.
Like the real Las Vegas Strip, it is busy with neon billboards, tourists and Elvis impersonators. GTA Wiki also notes a detail drivers may spot: a cross-hatched parking lane where expensive cars and motorbikes often spawn, which traffic tends to avoid. For the wider city, its districts and its later mentions in the HD games, see our Las Venturas article.
A small oddity is noted by GTA Wiki: The Strip has no police scanner clip of its own. When Carl picks up a wanted level there, the dispatcher simply names Las Venturas instead. In practice the road works less as a separate neighbourhood than as the spine that ties the city's casinos together.
Which casinos are on The Strip?
GTA Wiki lists twelve casinos: The Four Dragons, Come-A-Lot, The Pink Swan, The Camel's Toe, The High Roller, the Royal Casino, Pirates in Men's Pants, Caligula's Palace, The Clown's Pocket, The Visage, the Starfish Casino and The Emerald Isle. Most are just scenery. Several are built as parodies of real Las Vegas resorts, often with joke names.
| Strip casino | Real-world model (per GTA Wiki) | Can you go in? |
|---|---|---|
| The Four Dragons | Imperial Palace (now The Linq) | Yes, also a safehouse |
| Caligula's Palace | Caesars Palace | Yes |
| Come-A-Lot | Excalibur | No |
| The Visage | The Mirage | No, only the car park |
| Pirates in Men's Pants | Treasure Island | Hotel suite only (safehouse) |
GTA Wiki adds a few notes on the models. Pirates in Men's Pants copies Treasure Island even though the real resort did not open until October 1993, a year after the game's setting. The fountain in front of The Visage glows like the volcano outside the Mirage. The Emerald Isle is the largest casino in the city, with The Visage second.
What happens at The Four Dragons Casino?
The Four Dragons belongs to the Triads of Wu Zi Mu, the Triad leader Carl Johnson got to know in San Fierro. GTA Wiki says the casino opened in 1992 and serves as the gang's base in Las Venturas. It unlocks after the mission Learning to Fly and also works as a save point. Once Carl deals with the Sindacco family, who are sabotaging the business, Woozie offers him a share. The ownership ends up split in thirds between Wu Zi Mu, Ran Fa Li and Carl. See our Wu Zi Mu page and the Triads page for their wider story.
One memorable mission plays out on the road itself. To find out who is behind the attacks, Carl ties Johnny Sindacco to the bonnet of a car and drives him along The Strip until he names his family. The heist on Caligula's Palace is later planned from a janitor's closet in the Four Dragons basement.
What is Caligula's Palace?
Caligula's Palace is the rival casino, a Roman-themed parody of Caesars Palace. GTA Wiki says it borrows its fountains from the Bellagio. The Sindacco family first ran it, and it is later shared with the Leone and Forelli families. Ken Rosenberg, last seen in Vice City, works there as the manager caught between the three families, and he helps Carl get close to Salvatore Leone.
Wikipedia confirms that Carl and Wu Zi Mu plan and carry out a robbery of this Mafia-run casino. In the mission Breaking the Bank at Caligula's, the crew breaks into the vault and splits the cash. GTA Wiki notes the casino stays open for gambling after the heist. It also mentions a stretch of in-game boasting: the casino calls itself the largest hotel in the world, though in 1992 that title belonged to the Excalibur, the model for Come-A-Lot down the road.
Can you gamble on The Strip?
Yes, in the two casinos you can enter. Both offer blackjack, roulette, video poker and slot machines, and the Four Dragons also has a wheel of fortune. GTA Wiki explains that a higher gambling skill lets Carl borrow money and go into debt. If his balance falls to minus $500 or lower, debt collectors hunt him around Las Venturas until he pays it off. Security guards in both casinos react like police if Carl turns violent.
