The Truth
The Truth is an ageing hippie and conspiracy theorist in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004). CJ meets him in the countryside during his exile from Los Santos, and the two become friends. He sends CJ on odd jobs, from stealing a harvester to raiding the secret base Area 69. He is voiced by the actor Peter Fonda.
Who is The Truth in GTA San Andreas?
The Truth is one of the first friends CJ makes after being forced out of Los Santos. Wikipedia describes him as an ageing hippie who grows marijuana in the countryside. The GTA Wiki adds that he is a firm believer in government conspiracies and drives a painted van he calls "The Mothership".
He is never given a real name in the game. Mostly he talks: long monologues about secret agencies, mind control and cover-ups, which the game plays for comedy while letting some of his claims turn out to be true.
Which missions does The Truth give?
His jobs move with CJ across the map. The GTA Wiki lists these as his main missions.
| Mission | What happens |
|---|---|
| "Body Harvest" | CJ steals a combine harvester for him |
| "Are You Going to San Fierro?" | CJ burns the crops on his farm before the police arrive, then they drive to San Fierro |
| "Black Project" | CJ breaks into Area 69 and takes a jetpack |
| "Green Goo" | CJ uses the jetpack to steal a mysterious container from a train |
"Black Project" is the best known of these. CJ infiltrates Area 69, the game's version of Area 51, and escapes with a jetpack. The GTA Wiki says The Truth also appears in the finale, "End of the Line", and calls CJ on the phone after some missions.
Who voices The Truth?
Peter Fonda, the star of Easy Rider, voices the character. Wikipedia's cast list for the game names him, and the GTA Wiki gives the same credit. The casting plays on Fonda's counterculture image from the late 1960s.
Is The Truth linked to Zero and the garage?
Indirectly. After "Are You Going to San Fierro?", The Truth helps CJ settle in San Fierro, where the GTA Wiki lists the electronics nerd Zero and the mechanics Dwaine and Jethro among his associates. Those links help CJ get the Doherty garage running, which anchors the middle of the story.
Is The Truth in GTA V?
Not as the same character. Grand Theft Auto V belongs to a separate continuity. The GTA Wiki notes that it has a mission strand also called "The Truth", but that is a separate article and not a return of the San Andreas hippie.
