Mike Toreno
Mike Toreno is one of the key figures in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004). He appears to run the Loco Syndicate's drug supply in San Fierro, but turns out to be an undercover government agent. He survives CJ's attack, then uses Sweet's prison sentence to make CJ work for him on covert jobs. He is voiced by James Woods.
Who is Mike Toreno?
In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Mike Toreno is first presented as the supplier behind the Loco Syndicate, the drug ring that CJ infiltrates in San Fierro. Wikipedia describes him as friendly on the surface but hard to read. His real employer is a government agency that the game never names; the GTA Wiki says fans have assumed it is the CIA or something like it.
Which missions does Mike Toreno give?
CJ first meets him while working his way into the syndicate. In the mission "Mike Toreno", CJ and T-Bone Mendez rescue him after rivals kidnap him. Later, after the raid in "Pier 69", Toreno contacts CJ again from the desert and sets the terms: work for him and he will help get Sweet out of prison.
| Mission | CJ's task |
|---|---|
| "Mike Toreno" | Free Toreno from kidnappers with T-Bone |
| "Highjack" | Steal a truck on the move |
| "Interdiction" | Protect a drop and shoot down helicopters |
| "Verdant Meadows" | Buy the abandoned airstrip |
| "N.O.E." | Fly low under radar to deliver a package |
| "Stowaway" | Sneak aboard a cargo plane and destroy it |
| "Vertical Bird" | Steal a jet fighter from an aircraft carrier |
How does Mike Toreno survive?
At the end of "Pier 69" CJ shoots down a helicopter that seems to carry Toreno, and the story treats him as dead. He then calls CJ out of the blue. According to the GTA Wiki he survived and is listed as alive. His last appearance is in "Home Coming", where he keeps his promise and Sweet is released, ending CJ's run of forced jobs around Las Venturas and the desert.
Who voices Mike Toreno?
The film actor James Woods voices Toreno. Wikipedia's article on the game lists him among the cast, and the GTA Wiki credits him too. His fast, sardonic delivery is a big part of why the character stands out among the game's crime bosses.
Why is Mike Toreno remembered?
He brings a spy-thriller strand into a story that starts in the street. His missions push CJ into aircraft, military hardware and secret deliveries, and they are the reason CJ buys the Verdant Meadows airstrip. Toreno never explains himself fully, which fits a character whose whole job is to keep secrets.
