Vapid (GTA manufacturer)

Updated · Fan site. Not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.

Vapid is a fictional American car maker in the Grand Theft Auto series, first seen in GTA IV (2008). It is a parody of Ford: the GTA Wiki notes that its red oval badge mimics Ford's blue oval. Vapid builds everyday saloons, pickups, vans and muscle cars such as the Dominator, plus many of the taxis and police cars on GTA streets.

What is Vapid in GTA?

Vapid is one of the made-up car brands Rockstar uses in place of real manufacturers. It sits in the mass-market corner of the line-up: family saloons, pickups, delivery trucks and vans, with a handful of performance cars on top. If a taxi or patrol car passes you in a modern GTA game, there is a good chance it carries a Vapid badge. The wider brand system is covered in our GTA vehicles hub.

Which real car brand is Vapid based on?

The GTA Wiki identifies Ford as the main inspiration. The joke starts with the logo, a red oval with lettering in a similar style to Ford's famous blue badge. The name helps too: "vapid" means dull, a dig at a company known for plain, affordable cars. An in-game stock market blurb, quoted by the GTA Wiki, credits Vapid with inventing cheap mass production, another nod to Ford's assembly-line history.

Not every Vapid is a Ford lookalike. The GTA Wiki points to the Huntley Sport, which resembles a Range Rover, and the Bobcat and Speedo, which borrow from Chevrolet designs.

Vapid first turns up in GTA IV, released on 29 April 2008 according to Wikipedia. The brand then carries on through the handheld Chinatown Wars, GTA V and GTA Online, which keeps adding new models with its updates. Wikipedia notes that the cars of GTA IV are not copies of any single real vehicle but mix elements of several with the developers' own ideas, and the brand system grew out of that approach.

The Dominator is the brand's flagship. It has been released in many forms, from a classic 1960s version to Mustangs of later eras and the armoured arena-war cars of GTA Online. Ford's GT supercars appear twice, as the Bullet and the FMJ.

Does Vapid appear in the story?

Yes, as a stock. In GTA V, Vapid is traded on the in-game BAWSAQ exchange. During one of the assassination jobs handed out by Lester Crest, Franklin Clinton kills an investor who wants control of the company, and the GTA Wiki notes that Vapid shares fall afterwards. The brand also has a dealership building in downtown Los Santos where Trevor can buy a garage.
