Avery Carrington
Avery Carrington is a Texan property tycoon in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002). He hires Tommy Vercetti for a handful of dirty jobs meant to push down land prices, then advises him to buy up businesses across the city. He returns in Liberty City Stories, where he is killed in 1998. Burt Reynolds voiced him in Vice City.
Who is Avery Carrington?
Avery Carrington is a big-talking land developer from Texas who has made his fortune in Vice City. Wikipedia's summary of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, released on 29 October 2002 in North America, describes him as a Texan businessman who brings Tommy Vercetti in on several deals. GTA Wiki adds that he will use arson, threats, gang violence and murder to get the plots he wants.
He is a mentor of sorts to the young Donald Love, the media mogul who later turns up in GTA III. According to GTA Wiki, the relationship is not a warm one: Carrington seems to look down on his pupil.
What missions does Avery Carrington give in Vice City?
Carrington's jobs are all about real estate. GTA Wiki lists them as follows, and our own one-line descriptions are below.
| Mission | What Tommy does |
|---|---|
| Four Iron | Removes a landowner who would not sell, on a golf course |
| Demolition Man | Sabotages a rival developer's building site with a remote-control helicopter |
| Two Bit Hit | Stirs up trouble between the Cubans and the Haitians so that land gets cheaper |
| Shakedown | Gets advice at the mansion to start buying property and running protection |
Shakedown is the turning point. Once Tommy owns the old Diaz house, Carrington visits and tells him the way to real power is to own the city's businesses, which opens up the asset side of the game. GTA Wiki also ties him to Riot, a job arranged through Ken Rosenberg. The full list sits on our Vice City missions page.
What happens to Avery Carrington?
Carrington moves north. In Liberty City Stories, set in 1998, he is a minor character in Liberty City. GTA Wiki says Toni Cipriani kills him near the Shoreside Lift Bridge in the mission Panlantic Land Grab, and that Donald Love then has Toni recover the body. The game keeps what Love wants it for deliberately grim and odd.

Who voices Avery Carrington?
The Hollywood star Burt Reynolds voices Carrington in Vice City, according to Wikipedia's cast list. Reynolds was one of several famous film names Rockstar hired for the 1980s-themed game. GTA Wiki notes that the character speaks no lines in Liberty City Stories.
Carrington is a small part of the story, but his advice explains why Tommy ends Vice City as a property baron as well as a gangster. San Andreas still nods to him through billboards and dialogue, per GTA Wiki.
