CSR 103.9
CSR 103.9 is a radio station in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) that plays modern soul, R&B and new jack swing from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Its host is Philip "PM" Michaels, voiced according to the GTA Wiki by Michael Bivins of New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe. Thirteen songs play on it, from artists such as Bobby Brown, Boyz II Men and En Vogue.
What is CSR 103.9 in GTA San Andreas?
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the 2004 game set in a fictional version of early-1990s California, counts CSR 103.9 among its music stations. The name stands for Contemporary Soul Radio. The station covers the smooth, dance-friendly end of black American pop from that period: new jack swing, slick R&B and soul with a hip hop beat. It sits beside the harder rap of Radio Los Santos and the older funk of Bounce FM, and gives Carl Johnson's drives around Los Santos a lighter mood.

Who is the DJ on CSR 103.9?
The host is a smooth-talking character called Philip "PM" Michaels. The GTA Wiki credits his voice to Michael Bivins, a member of New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe. That gives the station a neat in-joke: Bell Biv DeVoe's own hit "Poison" is on the playlist, so the DJ is in effect spinning his own record. Wikipedia notes that San Andreas used twenty disc jockeys across eleven stations, many of them real musicians.
Which songs are on CSR 103.9?
The GTA Wiki lists thirteen tracks, all released between 1988 and 1992. A selection:
| Artist | Title |
|---|---|
| Bell Biv DeVoe | Poison |
| Bobby Brown | Don't Be Cruel |
| Boyz II Men | Motownphilly |
| En Vogue | My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) |
| SWV | I'm So Into You |
| Soul II Soul | Keep On Movin' |
| Johnny Gill | Rub You the Right Way |
| Wreckx-n-Effect | New Jack Swing |
A good share of the list has a New Edition link. Besides Bell Biv DeVoe, solo records by former members Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant are all on rotation, which the GTA Wiki points out means every member of the group is represented in some form.
How does the station sound in the game?
Like the other music stations in San Andreas, CSR mixes songs with host links, station idents and spoof adverts. Wikipedia explains that the game's stations are not fixed loops: song order is shuffled, and the hosts can comment on the weather and on events from the story. Different gangs and pedestrians have favourite stations, so the station you hear in a stolen car hints at who owned it.
Was CSR 103.9 called CSR 103.2?
Yes, briefly. According to the GTA Wiki, the original PlayStation 2 release labelled the station "CSR 103.2" in the audio menu, the manual and the on-screen name when switching stations, while the host and jingles said 103.9. Later versions corrected the text.
Did CSR 103.9 lose songs in later versions?
No. Many San Andreas stations lost tracks in re-releases after music licences expired. The GTA Wiki says CSR 103.9 is one of only three stations to keep its full original line-up in The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition; K-Rose and SF-UR are the others.
How was the San Andreas soundtrack received?
Wikipedia does not quote critics on CSR alone, but the soundtrack as a whole won several awards, among them a Golden Joystick for best game soundtrack, a D.I.C.E. award for outstanding achievement in soundtrack and a Spike award for best soundtrack. Interscope released a two-disc album in November 2004 and an eight-disc box set the following month.
