Vespucci Beach

Vespucci Beach is the GTA V and GTA Online version of Venice Beach, a crowded stretch of sand, shops and skateparks in south-west Los Santos. It first appeared under that name in GTA V (2013). GTA: San Andreas (2004) had the same beach as Verona Beach, where Carl Johnson could buy an apartment.

What is Vespucci Beach based on?

Venice Beach in Los Angeles. Wikipedia says the developer Abbot Kinney founded Venice in 1905 as a seaside resort styled on the Italian city, cut canals through the marshland, and saw the town merge into Los Angeles in 1926. Its seafront today is known for Ocean Front Walk, a long promenade of street performers and stalls, and for Muscle Beach, an open-air gym. The game's beach copies that mix of crowds, shops and workout spots.

The names are a joke on the original. GTA Wiki says Vespucci honours Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer, and that the 1992 name Verona is a pun on Venice, since Verona is an Italian city with no coastline. The wiki adds that Verona Beach may also nod to the setting of the 1996 film Romeo + Juliet.

Verona Beach in GTA San Andreas

In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas the beach is called Verona Beach and lies in south-west Los Santos. GTA Wiki places Santa Maria Beach (see Del Perro) to the west, Market and Marina to the north, and Verdant Bluffs and the Conference Center to the east. As in Venice, people walk around in swimwear and roller-skate along the front. Sights include the Verona Beach Gym, an art gallery and a pier.

The Ballas hold some territory here, though GTA Wiki says their presence is thinner than in the east of the city, and the area can be taken for the Grove Street Families in gang wars. Two story missions pass through. In Management Issues, OG Loc sends CJ after Madd Dogg's manager, and the pier becomes the scene of the hit. In Cut Throat Business, CJ and Madd Dogg chase OG Loc by hovercraft into Verona Beach and finish the pursuit in go-karts.

CJ can buy the Verona Beach Safehouse, an apartment east of the Burger Shot, for $10,000 from the start of the game. GTA Wiki says it has no garage. Like every property, it counts towards 100% completion. For more on homes in that game, see safehouses.

Vespucci Beach in GTA V

Grand Theft Auto V (17 September 2013) renames the beach Vespucci Beach and sets it beside Del Perro Beach in the Vespucci area. GTA Wiki says it is packed with sunbathers and walkers by day and almost empty at night, apart from beach cleaners and people sitting round fires. Landmarks include lifeguard huts along the sand, the lifeguard station, a police station, a skatepark, a sidewalk market, the Vespucci Beach Hotel, a small marina for jet skis and the Muscle Sands gym.

GTA Wiki lists the Marabunta Grande as the gang that controls the area, and notes that county sheriff's officers sometimes answer crimes here even though it lies inside the city.

Lifeguards patrol in a Blazer quad bike and an SUV parked by their station, and lifeguard Seasharks wait at the marina. For collectors, GTA Wiki places one of the letter scraps inside an empty swimming pool and a health pack under a small building by a basketball court, north-west of the Smoke on the Water shop.

Who lives at Vespucci Beach in GTA V?

The beach's best-known home is Floyd's apartment, at 7611 Goma Street on the corner of Magellan Avenue. GTA Wiki says the flat is modelled on Melanie's apartment in the film Jackie Brown and sits in a low-rise "dingbat" block. It actually belongs to Debra, the fiancée of Wade's cousin Floyd. Trevor Philips and Wade move in after Friends Reunited while they hunt for Michael, and it becomes one of Trevor's safehouses.

The flat is the planning base for The Merryweather Heist, an operation against Merryweather. Its time as a safehouse ends with Hang Ten: Debra comes home and confronts Trevor, she and Floyd are killed off-screen, and GTA Wiki says the door is later sealed with crime-scene tape.

Which missions take place at Vespucci Beach?

According to GTA Wiki, the beach appears in several story missions. In Repossession, Franklin Clinton and Lamar Davis fight off Vagos to take back a motorbike for the car dealer Simeon Yetarian. In Daddy's Little Girl, Michael races his son Jimmy on bicycles. The wiki also links The Hotel Assassination to the area.

In GTA Online the beach hosts the mission Pier Pressure, and GTA Wiki says one of the targets in the Bad Companies finale of The Diamond Casino Heist is found here, while a Los Santos Tuners planning job can also send players to the beach.
