Del Perro is a wealthy seaside city inside Los Santos County in GTA V and GTA Online (2013), modelled on Santa Monica. It is known for Del Perro Pier and its fairground, a busy beach and a cluster of office towers. Its 1992 counterpart in GTA: San Andreas is Santa Maria Beach, where CJ could buy a beach house.

What is Del Perro based on?

Santa Monica. Wikipedia describes Santa Monica as a city in its own right, incorporated in 1886 and surrounded by the city of Los Angeles on every side except the ocean. GTA Wiki says Del Perro works the same way: it is one of three incorporated cities in Los Santos County, along with Rockford Hills and Davis, even though it reads as part of Los Santos on the map.

The name means "of the dog" in Spanish, and GTA Wiki thinks it is a nod to Dogtown, a nickname for the Santa Monica area. The game's manual pitches Del Perro as a relaxed, fashionable beach town, while the wiki calls it crowded, expensive and full of tourists. GTA Wiki matches many of its buildings to real ones:

The wiki adds that the S-shaped road down the cliff to the Great Ocean Highway copies the California Incline, a real Santa Monica road seen in several films.

What is there to do on Del Perro Pier?

Del Perro Pier is the area's main draw, and GTA Wiki says it pulls in tourists, rich locals and homeless people alike. The fairground on it, Pleasure Pier, stands in for Pacific Park. According to Wikipedia, the first part of the real Santa Monica Pier opened on 9 September 1909, built mainly to carry sewer pipes beyond the surf, and Pacific Park opened on it on 25 May 1996 with a solar-panelled Ferris wheel.

Inland, GTA Wiki describes the Prosperity Street Promenade, an upmarket open-air mall that serves as the main shopping street, and a downtown of postmodern towers to the north. Hotels such as the Banner Hotel & Spa and the Von Crastenburg face the sea. The Del Perro Freeway and a Los Santos Transit station link the city to the rest of Los Santos.

Many shops are parodies of real chains. GTA Wiki pairs the Astro Theaters cinema with an AMC multiplex in Santa Monica and lists a Bean Machine coffee shop, a Lombank branch in a tower modelled on 100 Wilshire and the Hung Drawn & Quarters arcade on the pier, which stands in for Playland Arcade.

Which GTA V missions are set in Del Perro?

GTA Wiki ties three story missions of Grand Theft Auto V (17 September 2013) to Del Perro: Daddy's Little Girl, in which Michael De Santa races his son along the beach; Exercising Demons, one of Michael's side missions; and The Third Way. Its neighbour to the south is Vespucci Beach, where many of the beach scenes continue.

Del Perro in GTA Online

In GTA Online, Del Perro Heights is one of the best-known apartment blocks. GTA Wiki says the tower is based on the office building at 233 Wilshire Boulevard and offers three high-end units through the in-game estate agent Dynasty 8, all with ten-car garages: Apartment 4 at $468,000, added in the High Life update (13 May 2014, per Wikipedia), Apartment 7 at $200,000 and Apartment 20 at $205,000. What was Del Perro called in GTA San Andreas?

There is no Del Perro in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but GTA Wiki names Santa Maria Beach as its counterpart. That 1992 neighbourhood sits on the south coast of Los Santos, with Rodeo to the north and Verona Beach (the forerunner of Vespucci Beach) to the east. GTA Wiki says it is based on Santa Monica State Beach, and its long pier, the Yacht Harbor, on the Santa Monica Pier. A lighthouse stands at its south-west end.

Several missions end on that pier. High Stakes, Low-Rider finishes at its far end, and in Snail Trail Frank Tenpenny sends CJ to kill an informant meeting a journalist there. In Life's a Beach, CJ steals a sound van for OG Loc. CJ can also buy the Santa Maria Beach Safehouse, a beach house west of the pier, for $30,000; its garage holds up to four vehicles. GTA Wiki says the Temple Drive Families usually control the area, with the Ballas pushing in from the east.
