Grenade

The grenade is a throwable explosive that has been a regular in Grand Theft Auto since GTA 2 (1999). Most games sell it at Ammu-Nation, and in GTA V a single one costs $150 from the start of the story. From GTA IV onwards it can be held before throwing, which shortens the fuse but risks it going off in the player's hand.

What is the grenade in GTA?

The grenade is the series' standard thrown explosive. It is lobbed in an arc, bounces, and blows up after a short fuse, which makes it useful against groups of enemies, parked cars and anyone hiding behind cover. In GTA V it sits in the throwables segment of the weapon wheel, described in our guide to GTA weapons.

Where can you buy grenades?

There are free ones too. In GTA III they appear outside every safehouse once 30 hidden packages are found, and soldiers drop them. In San Andreas a supply appears at the Doherty garage after all 50 snapshots are taken. GTA V scatters pickups around the map, including in the Vinewood Hills and on some underwater wrecks.

How does cooking a grenade work?

From GTA IV onwards the player can hold a grenade before letting go, GTA Wiki notes. That shortens the time the target has to run, but hold it too long and it explodes in the player's own hand. Grenades can also be dropped, including out of a moving vehicle. In GTA IV they hurt the player more than the enemies, and an incoming grenade can be picked up and thrown back. GTA V tipped the balance the other way, making them stronger against enemies.

Survival changed as well. In the 3D games a player can live through more than one direct blast, while in the HD games one direct hit is fatal.

Which missions give you grenades?

Some story missions hand them out. GTA Wiki lists ten grenades as a pickup during Taking Out the Laundry in GTA III (see GTA III missions). In GTA V, Michael and Franklin each get 15 for Blitz Play, and Michael gets two in Monkey Business (see GTA V missions).

Grenade trivia

GTA Wiki collects a few odd details. In most 3D games a grenade landing in water makes the sound of an explosion but shows none. In GTA V, Chop the dog will chase a thrown grenade as if it were a ball. Grenades also feature in weapon cheats across the series.
