Davis is a poor, gang-troubled city in south Los Santos in GTA V and GTA Online (2013), modelled mainly on Compton with parts of Crenshaw. It contains the HD version of Grove Street, and the Ballas control most of its blocks. GTA Wiki treats it as the HD-era counterpart of Ganton, Carl Johnson's home district in GTA: San Andreas.

What is Davis based on?

Compton. GTA Wiki says Davis is heavily based on it, with pieces of other South Los Angeles neighbourhoods, especially Crenshaw. Wikipedia describes Compton as its own city in southern Los Angeles County, incorporated on 11 May 1888, south of downtown Los Angeles. In the same way, GTA Wiki lists Davis as one of three incorporated cities in Los Santos County, with Del Perro and Rockford Hills, and gives it its own city hall, courthouse and fire station.

GTA Wiki suggests the name honours Doris A. Davis. Wikipedia says she became mayor of Compton in 1973, the first Black woman to lead a metropolitan American city.

What is Davis like in GTA V?

In Grand Theft Auto V (17 September 2013), GTA Wiki describes Davis as poor, with high crime and heavy gang violence. The south and south-west are rows of small single-family houses, many with barred windows, while Carson Avenue and Davis Avenue form the commercial strip. Landmarks include the Davis Mega Mall, the public library, a sheriff's station with a police impound lot, and a Los Santos Transit station on Carson Avenue. The county sheriff, not the city police, patrols the area.

For shopping, GTA Wiki lists a 24/7 store, Cluckin' Bell and Bishop's Chicken, a petrol station and a row of small shops and launderettes. The radio station West Coast Classics also has its home in Davis, according to the same page.

Which gangs control Davis?

The Ballas run the city. GTA Wiki says they are the dominant presence and open fire on outsiders around Grove Street, Brouge Avenue and Covenant Avenue, though there are fewer of them north of Carson Avenue. The Families, the HD-era successors of the Grove Street Families, turn up on Carson Avenue near the Strawberry border and at the Chamberlain Hills end of Grove Street. The Vagos are not based here and appear only in GTA Online story missions.

Is Grove Street in Davis?

Yes. The Grove Street of GTA V runs through Davis near the Chamberlain Hills border. It is held by the Ballas, and GTA Wiki warns newcomers to think about the colour of their clothes. Our Grove Street article covers its history from 1992 to 2013 in detail.

The street's main story mission is Hood Safari. Lamar Davis sets it up from Franklin's house in Strawberry, and Franklin Clinton, Trevor Philips and Lamar go to a dealer's house on Grove Street to buy cocaine. GTA Wiki says Trevor finds the package is filler, a gunfight with the Ballas follows, the police arrive, and the three escape and split up to shake off the chase.

Is Davis the same as Ganton?

Not exactly, but GTA Wiki calls Davis the HD-era equivalent of Ganton, the east Los Santos district where Carl Johnson grew up in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The wiki also thinks Davis was originally meant to be called Ganton, pointing to a hangout in GTA V where Jimmy De Santa tells Franklin he represents the streets from Rockford Hills to Ganton. Are there safehouses in Davis?

None of the three leads lives here. Franklin's homes are in Strawberry and later Vinewood Hills, and the sources we read list no story safehouse in Davis. Our Grove Street article notes that Franklin can buy a garage on the street. GTA Wiki also places Tonya Wiggins' towing jobs at the impound lot beside the sheriff's station.

Davis in GTA Online

Two GTA Online story updates centre on Davis. In Lowriders, released on 10 October 2015 according to Wikipedia, Lamar hires the player to stage drive-bys on the Ballas while dressed as Vagos, hoping to start a gang war. In The Contract (15 December 2021), Wikipedia says Franklin runs a celebrity agency, F. Clinton and Partner, whose first big client is Dr. Dre, who has had a phone with unreleased music stolen.

GTA Wiki says that story begins with Franklin sending the player to Vernon of the Families. The Families and Ballas first clash in Davis, then join forces to attack the Vagos in Rancho, recover the music and end their feud. GTA Online also gives several police vehicles a Davis Police Department livery.
