What is Liberty Rock Radio?

Liberty Rock Radio, often shortened to LRR, is the main rock station of Liberty City in Grand Theft Auto IV, released on 29 April 2008. It plays rock from the 1970s and 1980s with a few later songs mixed in, and it carries over into The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. The GTA Wiki also notes that the station gets a mention in Chinatown Wars.

Who hosts Liberty Rock Radio?

According to the GTA Wiki, the DJ is Iggy Pop, the singer of The Stooges, playing himself. His links mix rock history with self-mockery. The GTA Wiki notes, for example, that he refers to the old story of Stooges shows where he ended up covered in peanut butter, and that he introduces The Doors with a jab about the band's 1969 Miami concert, a nod to the series' own Vice City. The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is on the playlist.

The heavier sound suits the biker story of Johnny Klebitz and The Lost MC.

Which songs were removed from Liberty Rock Radio?

On 26 April 2018 a number of songs were taken out of the digital and PC versions of GTA IV, which the GTA Wiki attributes to the end of ten-year licensing deals. Liberty Rock Radio lost nine in total.

  • ConfirmedRemoved from GTA IV: "1979" (The Smashing Pumpkins), "Edge of Seventeen" (Stevie Nicks), "Evil Woman" (Electric Light Orchestra), "Fascination" (David Bowie), "Heaven and Hell" (Black Sabbath). GTA Wiki
  • ConfirmedRemoved from the episodes: "Touch Too Much" (AC/DC), "Five to One" (The Doors), "Jane" (Jefferson Starship), "Run to the Hills" (Iron Maiden). GTA Wiki

Because AC/DC's song had also played over the end credits of The Lost and Damned, the GTA Wiki says it was swapped for "Wanted Dead or Alive" there.

How was the GTA IV soundtrack received?

According to Wikipedia, critics praised the licensed music of GTA IV and how well it fitted the city. Wikipedia also describes the scale of the licensing effort: the team contacted more than 2,000 people for rights, and Billboard reported fees of up to $5,000 per composition plus the same again per master recording.

Trivia

The GTA Wiki points out that Liberty Rock Radio shares its 97.8 frequency with Blonded Los Santos 97.8 FM in GTA V, and that Juliette Lewis, host of the rival Radio Broker, mocks LRR on air as a station for posers.
