The Journey

Updated · Fan site. Not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.

The Journey is the ambient music station in Grand Theft Auto IV (2008). It plays slow, long electronic and minimalist pieces by artists such as Aphex Twin, Philip Glass, Tangerine Dream and Jean Michel Jarre. Instead of a human DJ it is hosted by a synthesised computer voice. Two of its nine tracks were removed from digital versions in April 2018.

What is The Journey in GTA IV?

The Journey is the quietest station in Grand Theft Auto IV, released on 29 April 2008. Where other stations offer rock, hip hop or dance hits, The Journey plays ambient and downtempo music: long, slowly shifting pieces with few or no vocals. It suits late-night drives through Liberty City and gives the soundtrack a contrast to the chatter of the talk stations.

According to the GTA Wiki, the station carries over to The Lost and Damned, and to The Ballad of Gay Tony when it is played as part of the Complete Edition, but not in the stand-alone Episodes from Liberty City disc. Our GTA radio stations hub covers the rest of the line-up.

Who hosts The Journey?

No person does. The station is presented by a computer, described in the GTA Wiki as a machine made by Fruit, the series' parody of Apple, and its voice is a stock synthesised female voice. The GTA Wiki identifies it as "Vicki", one of the voices from Apple's old PlainTalk speech software, so there is no voice actor to credit. The host's links are deliberately vague, half-philosophical statements, and some of them suggest to the listener that they are living inside a simulation, a sly joke in a video game.

Which songs play on The Journey?

The GTA Wiki lists nine pieces. A selection:

Aphex TwinZ Twig

Jean Michel JarreOxygène, Pt 4
Tangerine DreamRemote Viewing

The Aphex Twin track comes from Selected Ambient Works Volume II, whose pieces have no official titles. The GTA Wiki notes that the game credits it by its disc and track number for that reason. The Philip Glass piece is a 1998 re-recording rather than the original version.

Which songs were removed from The Journey?

On 26 April 2018 Rockstar removed a set of songs from the digital and PC versions of GTA IV, which the GTA Wiki links to the end of ten-year licences. The Journey lost two.

Who listens to The Journey?

The GTA Wiki notes that Derrick McReary, the troubled older brother of Packie McReary, and Kiki Jenkins both list The Journey among their favourite stations.

How was the GTA IV soundtrack received?

Wikipedia says critics praised the game's licensed music and how well it matched the setting. Music supervisor Ivan Pavlovich, it adds, aimed for songs that reflect New York without sounding tied to a single year, which explains how a station of older ambient pieces fits in beside current hits.
