Grotti

Grotti is a fictional Italian maker of luxury sports cars and supercars in Grand Theft Auto. The GTA Wiki describes it as a parody of Ferrari, and most of its range copies a real Ferrari model. The brand as it exists today first appeared in GTA IV (2008) and has its biggest line-up in GTA V and GTA Online.

What is Grotti in GTA?

Grotti is one of the made-up car brands Rockstar uses instead of real manufacturers (see GTA vehicles). It sells expensive two-door sports cars and supercars, a few hypercars, and some speedboats. It also has a cheaper side: the Brioso city cars are small hatchbacks rather than racing machines. The in-game world treats the name as a byword for luxury; one fictional airline even brags that it is the Grotti of its own trade.

Which real car brand is Grotti based on?

According to the GTA Wiki, Grotti parodies Ferrari, and nearly every model follows a Ferrari road car. There are a few exceptions. The Brioso models take after the Fiat 500, and the Visione follows a McLaren-style concept rather than a Ferrari. The badge changes from game to game but always mocks Ferrari's: a sitting horse in GTA IV, a tilted cross in GTA V.

The name itself is probably a joke. The GTA Wiki suggests it plays on the British word grotty, meaning shabby or nasty, which is an odd fit for a prestige brand and almost certainly intended.

What are the best-known Grotti cars?

The Cheetah is the most famous name on the list. In the 3D-era games it was a Testarossa look-alike, and in GTA V it became a Grotti supercar modelled on the Enzo. The Turismo has a similar history and grew into a whole family in GTA Online, from the classic F40-style car to the hybrid Turismo R.

When did Grotti first appear?

The brand in its current form arrived with GTA IV in 2008, and it also appears in Chinatown Wars. Liberty City has a Grotti showroom in Algonquin, which the GTA Wiki says copies a real Ferrari and Maserati dealer on Park Avenue in Manhattan. In GTA V and GTA Online the cars are sold at Luxury Autos in Rockford Hills and through in-game websites.
