GTA Online: The Contract

The Contract is a GTA Online update released on 15 December 2021. It brought back Franklin Clinton from GTA V, now running a celebrity problem-solving firm called F. Clinton and Partner with the player. Its main story has the Agency recover unreleased music stolen from Dr. Dre, and the update added new songs by Dre and other artists to the game's radio.

What is The Contract in GTA Online?

The Contract is a story-led update for GTA Online. Wikipedia records that Rockstar announced it on 8 December 2021 and released it a week later, on 15 December 2021. Its main draw was the return of Franklin Clinton, one of the three leads of Grand Theft Auto V, as a character in the online world, older and now a businessman.

What is the Agency?

The update's new property is the Agency, run under the name F. Clinton and Partner. Wikipedia describes it as a celebrity solutions agency: a firm that makes problems go away for rich and famous clients. Franklin runs it as the senior partner, with the player bought in as co-owner. As our businesses guide explains, Lamar Davis claims credit for setting up the partnership, and a hacker named Imani provides intel from the office.

Day-to-day work comes through the office computer as security contracts. Wikipedia also lists payphone assassination jobs, where an anonymous caller hands out targets, and Short Trips, a three-part side story in which players control Lamar or Franklin.

What happens in the Dr. Dre story?

The headline story is a VIP contract for Dr. Dre. Wikipedia explains that Dre's phone, holding music he has not yet released, has been stolen, and the Agency has to get it back before the songs leak. GTA Wiki says the job opens after the player finishes any one security contract, starting with a round of golf at the Los Santos Golf Club where Franklin and the player meet Dre, DJ Pooh and Jimmy Iovine.

The structure borrows from the game's heists. An investigation finds three copies of the music, each in a different part of the city, and GTA Wiki splits the recovery into three strands of missions: one through the nightlife scene, one among the wealthy, and one in South Los Santos. After that, the player brings Dre back to the studio and protects it from attack, then goes after Johnny Guns, the rival producer behind the theft. Wikipedia says Dre rewards the crew by letting them hear his newest track first. GTA Wiki lists a total of $1,000,000 for the leader across the story.

What music did The Contract add?

Music was central to the update. According to Wikipedia, new songs by Dr. Dre and collaborators including Anderson .Paak and Snoop Dogg were added to Radio Los Santos and West Coast Classics, and were released as singles on 4 February 2022. GTA Wiki notes that Aftermath Entertainment put the tracks out as an album titled Grand Theft Auto - The Contract. The update also added a station called MOTOMAMI Los Santos, hosted by Rosalía and Arca.

What else came with the update?

Wikipedia counts 17 new vehicles and three weapons: the Heavy Rifle, a stun gun and a compact EMP launcher, plus clothing. Like the earlier Los Santos Tuners update, The Contract leaned on real music and celebrity cameos to give the online world a sense of time moving on from the single-player story.
