Vinewood
Vinewood is the Grand Theft Auto series' version of Hollywood, the film district of Los Santos. It first appeared in GTA: San Andreas (2004), with movie studios and a cemetery below the rich hills of Mulholland. In GTA V and GTA Online (2013) it grows into a large district of five neighbourhoods, with Vinewood Hills and the famous sign above it.
What is Vinewood based on?
Vinewood stands in for Hollywood. According to Wikipedia, Hollywood is a neighbourhood of Central Los Angeles that ran itself as a separate town from 1903 until it joined the city of Los Angeles in 1910, and its name is now shorthand for the American film business. Both versions of Los Santos give Vinewood that job: it is where the studios, the theatres, the celebrities and the tourists are.
The best-known shared landmark is the hillside sign. Wikipedia says the real Hollywood Sign was dedicated on 13 July 1923, first read "HOLLYWOODLAND" to advertise a housing estate, and stands on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills. Both the 2004 and 2013 games put a Vinewood Sign on the hills north of the district.
Where is Vinewood in GTA San Andreas?
In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, set in 1992, Vinewood sits in the north-centre of the city. GTA Wiki gives its neighbours as Mulholland to the north, Richman to the north-west, Rodeo to the west and Market and Temple to the south and east. It models the district on Hollywood and West Hollywood and describes it as thinly populated but among the richest parts of town, with more sports cars on the roads than elsewhere.
Its main sights, according to GTA Wiki, are Vinewood Movie Studios (based on Paramount Pictures), InterGlobal Television, Vinewood Cemetery and Vinewood Tower, a copy of the Sunset Tower Hotel. Some Hollywood landmarks were placed just outside the district: the Capitol Records lookalike stands in Market and the copy of the Chinese Theatre stands in Temple. The game's manual invites players to stroll the Walk of Fame on Vinewood Boulevard.
The cemetery matters to the story. In the mission Sweet & Kendl, Carl Johnson and his family bury their mother there, and Ballas gunmen attack the mourners, who flee back to Grove Street on bicycles. In Los Sepulcros the Ballas hold a funeral of their own at the same cemetery, and Sweet plans to slip over the back wall to kill a senior Balla named Kane.
What is Mulholland in GTA San Andreas?
Mulholland is the hill district above Vinewood. GTA Wiki says it is modelled on Mulholland Drive and the Hollywood Hills, and that the Vinewood Sign, despite its name, actually stands in Mulholland. Two of CJ's homes are here. The Mulholland Safehouse costs $120,000, the highest price of any property in the game, and is based on the Stahl House; its garage takes up to four vehicles.
The other is Madd Dogg's Crib, the mansion of the rapper Madd Dogg. CJ first breaks in during Madd Dogg's Rhymes to steal a book of lyrics for OG Loc. Later the house is taken over by a gangster called Big Poppa, and in A Home in the Hills CJ wins it back with help from the San Fierro Triads. CJ then becomes Madd Dogg's manager and the mansion becomes a safehouse. GTA Wiki notes that Cut Throat Business, Vertical Bird and Home Coming all start there.
Vinewood in GTA V and GTA Online
Grand Theft Auto V (17 September 2013) turns Vinewood into a large district bordered by Vinewood Hills, Rockford Hills, Downtown Los Santos and the Tataviam Mountains. GTA Wiki splits it into five neighbourhoods: Alta, Downtown Vinewood, East Vinewood (which includes Mirror Park and Vinewood Racetrack), Hawick and West Vinewood. It matches them to Hollywood, East Hollywood, West Hollywood, the Melrose area, and Echo Park and Silver Lake. GTA Wiki also says the old 1992 district is closest to today's West Vinewood.
The wiki describes the district as quiet, with no gang claiming its streets, though street robberies happen and members of The Lost MC sometimes cause trouble. Many of its buildings copy real Los Angeles landmarks:
| In the game | Real-world model (per GTA Wiki) |
|---|---|
| Vinewood Sign | Hollywood Sign |
| Oriental Theater | Grauman's Chinese Theatre |
| Badger Building | Capitol Records Building |
| Von Crastenburg Hotel | Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel |
| Pegasus Concierge Hotel | Sunset Tower Hotel |
| Vinewood Wax Haven | Hollywood Wax Museum |
What is Vinewood Hills in GTA V?
Vinewood Hills is the HD version of Mulholland. GTA Wiki calls it the largest and most northerly neighbourhood of Los Santos, based on the Hollywood Hills, with large modern homes for the rich and famous. The game's manual says more celebrities live here than anywhere else in the city. Its landmarks include the Vinewood Sign, the Galileo Observatory, Lake Vinewood and the Vinewood Bowl.
Several story beats happen here. In Marriage Counseling, Michael De Santa and Franklin Clinton tie a truck's winch to a stilt house and pull it down the slope. Michael thinks it belongs to his wife's tennis coach, but it is the home of Martin Madrazo's mistress. GTA Wiki says Madrazo then demands about $2.5 million, which sends Michael back to crime and to Lester Crest. The wiki also lists Caida Libre, Surveying the Score and the roof approach of The Bureau Raid among missions in the hills.
After The Hotel Assassination, Franklin leaves his family home in Strawberry for a house at 3671 Whispymound Drive in Vinewood Hills, and GTA Wiki lists Chop as moving with him. Other residents named by the wiki include Martin Madrazo, the film producer Solomon Richards and the actress Lacey Jonas.
In GTA Online, Wikipedia says the A Safehouse in the Hills update (10 December 2025) added luxury mansions that players can buy. GTA Wiki also lists the older Franklin of the 2021 story, now a wealthy agency owner, among Vinewood's residents. See safehouses and GTA Online businesses for how property works.
