GTA IV missions
Grand Theft Auto IV (2008) tells Niko Bellic's story through a long run of story missions handed out by more than a dozen contacts, from his cousin Roman to the Mafia. Several missions ask Niko to kill or spare someone, and the mission One Last Thing splits the game into a Deal ending and a Revenge ending, each with its own final missions.
How do missions work in GTA IV?
In Grand Theft Auto IV, story missions are set jobs with fixed goals. Contacts often reach Niko by phone or text. Wikipedia notes that several missions can be open at the same time, because some contacts wait for a call or an event before they hand out the next job. Doing a friend's missions also raises that friend's opinion of Niko, which can unlock favours. The city does not open all at once. According to the GTA Wiki (gta.wiki), the bank robbery Three Leaf Clover is the job that opens the bridges and tunnel to Alderney.

What is the story arc of the GTA IV missions?
The early jobs are small. Niko helps Roman with the taxi firm and the men he owes money to, then becomes a hired gun for the Russian mob. On Dimitri Rascalov's advice he kills Mikhail Faustin, and Dimitri then turns on him. That betrayal drives Niko out of Broker and into work for almost anyone who pays. The middle of the game belongs to the McReary family, the drug trade in Bohan and the agency known as United Liberty Paper, which in the end finds Darko Brevic, the man who betrayed Niko's old unit. The last stretch is Mafia work for Ray Boccino and Jimmy Pegorino. Our Niko Bellic page tells the full story; this page only maps the missions.
One thing players notice today is that Grand Theft Auto IV has no mid-mission checkpoints, so a failed mission starts again from the beginning. As our Lost and Damned page notes, checkpoints were only added in the first episode.
Which GTA IV missions have choices?
Choices are one of the things that set Grand Theft Auto IV apart from earlier games. According to gta.wiki, these story missions ask Niko to decide who lives:
| Mission | The choice |
|---|---|
| Ivan the Not So Terrible | Kill or spare Ivan |
| Holland Nights | Kill or spare the target |
| The Holland Play | Kill Playboy X or Dwayne Forge |
| Blood Brothers | Kill Francis McReary or Derrick McReary |
| That Special Someone | Kill or spare Darko Brevic |
| One Last Thing | Take the deal with Dimitri, or take revenge on him |
Some of these choices come back later; gta.wiki notes, for example, that a spared Ivan can turn up again as a random character. One Last Thing matters most, because it decides which ending you get.
What are the ending missions in GTA IV?
After One Last Thing the story runs down one of two short paths. Both include Roman's wedding, Mr. & Mrs. Bellic, but what happens there differs, as our GTA IV and Roman Bellic pages explain.
| Ending | Missions in order | Final target |
|---|---|---|
| Deal | If the Price is Right, Mr. & Mrs. Bellic, A Revenger's Tragedy | Dimitri Rascalov |
| Revenge | A Dish Served Cold, Mr. & Mrs. Bellic, Out of Commission | Jimmy Pegorino |
In the Deal ending Roman is killed at the wedding and Niko hunts down Dimitri. In the Revenge ending Kate McReary dies instead and Niko goes after Pegorino. Both finales end with a chase from Alderney to Happiness Island, according to gta.wiki.
What else is there besides story missions?
A contact known as the Fixer offers nine assassination jobs, which gta.wiki lists as Water Hazard, Dead End, Migration Control, Derelict Target, Balling Out for Good, Hook, Line and Sinker, R.U.B. Down, Industrial Action and Taken Out. Repeatable side work includes taxi jobs for Roman, Little Jacob's drug deliveries, Brucie's races, Stevie's car thefts, Exotic Exports, Most Wanted police jobs and Vigilante. Random characters met around the city give one-off tasks too. Our GTA side missions page covers side jobs across the series.
How do the GTA IV missions connect to the episodes?
The two episodes run at the same time as Niko's story, so some missions are seen from more than one side. Wikipedia notes that the bank robbery Luis Lopez witnesses in The Ballad of Gay Tony is Three Leaf Clover, and that the diamond exchanges in Museum Piece, I'll Take Her and Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend are also part of the episodes' plots. See The Lost and Damned missions and The Ballad of Gay Tony missions for those lists.
