The Exchange is the final story mission of Grand Theft Auto III (2001). Catalina demands $500,000 for the kidnapped Maria, then double-crosses Claude at her Cedar Grove mansion and flees by helicopter. Claude fights his way to the Cochrane Dam, frees Maria and shoots the helicopter down. The game ends on an unexplained gunshot.

What is the last mission in GTA III?

The last storyline job in Grand Theft Auto III is The Exchange. It closes the revenge plot that starts in the opening bank robbery, when Catalina shoots Claude and leaves him behind. gta.wiki also notes that it is the last mission in the in-game timeline of the 3D era, since the other games of that period are set earlier. How do you unlock The Exchange?

It follows straight on from Ransom. According to gta.wiki, Ransom begins after Asuka Kasen's mission S.A.M. Claude climbs a building site in Fort Staunton, finds Asuka and the Cartel man Miguel dead, sees that Maria is gone and picks up Catalina's note. The note asks for $500,000 at the villa in Cedar Grove. gta.wiki notes that The Exchange only becomes available once Claude actually has that much money.

The kidnapping is the end of a feud that runs through the late Staunton Island missions. Wikipedia explains that Asuka blamed the Cartel for her brother Kenji's death, captured Catalina's partner Miguel and tortured him for information. Catalina, who had already shot Miguel herself, struck back by killing Asuka and Miguel and taking Maria, who was Asuka's friend.

What happens in The Exchange?

Claude brings the cash to the gate of the Cartel mansion in Cedar Grove. Catalina takes the case and, true to form, breaks the deal. She leaves in a helicopter with Maria and leaves Claude to her gunmen. gta.wiki says he starts out unarmed and picks up a pistol from a guard, then takes weapons from the men he defeats on the way. One checkpoint also has a sniper rifle.

The route runs down the road to the Cochrane Dam, with Cartel groups at checkpoints and around Maria. At the dam Claude reaches Maria and frees her. Catalina's helicopter is untouchable while she still has Maria aboard; once she drops Maria and climbs back in, it can be hit. A rocket launcher waits on the rooftop area of the dam, and gta.wiki says two hits bring the aircraft down. Catalina dies in the crash.

The mission fails if Claude is killed or arrested, if Maria dies, or if Catalina gets away.

After the crash, Claude and Maria climb the stairs of the dam. A news report describes the Cedar Grove gunfight and its death toll. Then the screen fades to black while Maria complains about her ordeal. A single gunshot cuts her off and the credits roll.

The scene has fuelled debate ever since, because the game never shows who fired. Wikipedia reports that Rockstar itself has said it is not sure whether Claude shot Maria or simply fired to make her stop talking. gta.wiki adds that her speech over the credits was meant to be longer.

Why is The Exchange remembered?

The mission is best known for its ending. The unexplained gunshot over a black screen is still one of the most argued-about moments of the early 3D games, and Rockstar's own uncertainty, as reported by Wikipedia, has kept the question alive. It also gives the silent Claude a final scene in which he still says nothing. Catalina's story continues backwards in San Andreas, which shows how she and Claude first met.
