Wrong Side of the Tracks

Wrong Side of the Tracks is a Los Santos story mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), given by Big Smoke. CJ rides a dirt bike alongside a moving train while Smoke shoots at Vagos on its roof. It is one of the most infamous missions in the series, and Smoke's line when it fails became a long-running internet meme.

What happens in Wrong Side of the Tracks?

The mission starts at Big Smoke's house in Idlewood. As CJ arrives, the corrupt officers Frank Tenpenny and Eddie Pulaski are walking away from Smoke's garage, and they trade a few hostile words with him. Smoke explains that the Los Santos Vagos are doing a deal with members of the San Fierro Rifa, and the pair head to Unity Station in Smoke's Glendale.

The Vagos climb onto a passing train. CJ grabs a Sanchez dirt bike and gives chase with Smoke riding behind him. The player's job is only to steer: Smoke does the shooting, so CJ has to keep the bike close enough to the carriages for him to get a clear line on the gang members standing on the roof. The route runs out of the city, into Red County and through a tunnel towards Las Venturas, with an oncoming train and a blocked stretch of road to get past.

Once the last Vago is dead, CJ has to drive Smoke home. Back at the house the two argue about the state of Grove Street, and Smoke sends CJ away, saying he does not want C.R.A.S.H. dragging him in as well.

Who gives the mission and what does it unlock?

It is the third of Big Smoke's four missions in the Los Santos act, following Running Dog and leading to Just Business. According to the GTA Wiki it pays respect but no cash. The opening scene matters for the story: seeing Tenpenny and Pulaski leave Smoke's place is one of the early signs of the betrayal that comes out in The Green Sabre. The full list of jobs is on our San Andreas missions page.

Why is Wrong Side of the Tracks so hard?

Because the player cannot shoot, success depends on Smoke's aim, and many players failed again and again. The GTA Wiki notes that the Vagos on the train take around four times the usual number of hits to kill. The mission fails if a single Vago is still alive when the train reaches Frederick Bridge, if Smoke dies, or if the Glendale is wrecked.

What does "follow the damn train, CJ" mean?

When the train gets away, Smoke yells that all they had to do was follow it. That line, delivered to every player who failed, turned into one of the best-known memes from the game. The GTA Wiki lists references to it in later games, including a gold objective in the GTA V mission Derailed and a Red Dead Online mission with a play on the title.

TheGamer reported in January 2021 that Cyberpunk 2077 hides a collectible shard near train tracks in Night City with a conversation between characters called Little Smoke and JC, which quotes the line in full.

Where does the mission fit in the story?

Wrong Side of the Tracks sits in the middle of the Los Santos act, while CJ is still busy helping Sweet win back turf from the Ballas. At this point Smoke is still one of CJ's closest friends, and the player has no reason to doubt him. Looking back, the mission is full of small warning signs: police officers leaving his house, a deal involving a rival gang that he somehow knows about, and his anxious wish to get CJ out of the way afterwards. Those threads are pulled together a few missions later.

Where does the name come from?

The GTA Wiki suggests the title plays on the phrase "the wrong side of the tracks", used for the poorer part of a town. It fits a mission that is literally fought along a railway line and that shows how deep Smoke has slipped into business CJ knows nothing about.
